White Smoke

Hi to all,

I have just recently joined this very informative forum last month, and have acquired many tips from you guys.

I'm from NZ and bought a 2nd-hand imported Nissan Xtrail 2001 from Japan last month. I noticed that there are clouds of white smoke coming out from the exhaust pipe during the last few days when I start the car on cold mornings, which I assumed is normal because the engine is still cold. But after travelling for about 30 kms to reach work, I still noticed white smoke seen from the naked eye coming out of the exhaust. Is this still normal?

Thanks in advance for all your answers?

Re: White Smoke

If the smoke is still coming out half hour later I'd be a little concerned... unless you are in minus temperatures still... which I expect is unlikely at this time of year.

When you say it is white smoke... is it just white? Or does it have a blue in it?

Have you checked the oil?

Re: White Smoke

White smoke could be link to a head gasket issue...although I've not heard of any problems like that linked to the 2.5 engine that's in the X-T and other Nissan products.

Have you noticed any loss of power ?

Do you see more smoke under acceleration ??

If it persists, might want to have your local mechanic have a look - test drive...

Re: White Smoke

There have been reports of a blown head gasket in the UK but that is usually coupled with overheating. If your engine is overheating then that could well be the head gasket.

Re: White Smoke

Check the underside of your oil filler in the morning after the engine has cooled o/nite, if there are signs of moisture ie,. water droplets then you do have a headgasket problem or even the possibility of a cracked head.

Also take the radiator cap off when the engine has warmed up a little bit (careful removing the cap in case of scalding, release cap to first notch and allow pressure to escape before full removal) and then check for any air bubbles in the top of the radiator tank.

Any sign of air bubbles indicates blown head gasket or cracked head.

Re: White Smoke

Hi all,

The smoke is white as viewed from the side mirror

I have check the oil filler cap, and it has no evidence of moisture, also I have checked the rediator, and i've see no bubbles or oil.

Anyway, I will try to observe again tomorrow for these smokes after travelling to my work.

Thanks

Re: White Smoke

White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe. This is normal when first started.

All cars omit steam from the exhaust pipe when the car is cold. Then as it warms the steam dissipates and can't be seen.

If white smoke continues you have an internal coolant leak, i.e., cracked head/blown head gasket.

Re: White Smoke

Re: White Smoke

Still related...

I have heard that overfilling the engine with oil can cause excessive pressure and is a possible cause of blown head gaskets & rings...

I wouldn't have thought overfilling the coolant (radiator) would've caused any problems, but if you've said your problem is now fixed, I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise emoticon

Any comments?
