Windscreen Replacement

Just a heads-up to anyone needing a windscreen replaced on their Exy.

I was unlucky enough to have a stone take out my windscreen while driving in Sydney last September.

It's taken til this week and 5 visits to get a satisfactory outcome from Windscreens O'Briens - one of two companies specified by my lease company, and one I'd previously had good dealings with.

First problem was the glass, branded XTG (a Korean company), had very unacceptable distortion. Additionally, the seals whistled - like you had a window open 4mm - and looked different to the genuine Nissan seals they were claimed to be.

The replacement for this XTG screen - still from XTG - had less but still unacceptable distortion; and the seals on it continued to whistle. Within a month or so, the seals actually came loose.

Eventually, a PGI screen was fitted with genuine Nissan seals and all is now okay. PGI is Protector Glass Industries, a Sydney-based company.

Along the way, I talked to a couple of local Nissan dealers about their ability to do better with a genuine Nissan screen (circa $800 parts plus fitting). In each case, they indicated that they contracted out the screen fitting, and doubted that their fitter would have much experience, if any, in doing exy windscreens.

The other fitter on my lease companies list indicated that the screens they have are XTG also.

I'm not quite sure where I'd go if I needed another screen - is the devil you know better than the one you don't ?

Although it took a big effort, eventually OBriens delivered - and from what they've learned from this should be able to take care of other Xtrails without such a hassle.

If you choose that path, make sure you get

1) genuine Nissan seals (and see the packaging !)
2) not an XTG brand screen

PGI have a fairly extensive dealer network see here so maybe they'd be worth a try.

It would be nice to hear if anyone has had a good experience with a dealer-fitted screen.

Regards

DOM

its mod spelt backward, coz I have none.
(not counting the slightly modified screen !)

Excellent advice, Dom. I'm sure your experience will be valued highly by many when the time arises.

Jalal - I'm surprised you don't already have one salvaged from the wreckers emoticon

Windscreen fitter tells me that passenger side air-bag will crack the screen if it goes off. That's just another hidden cost of air-bags.

Even if the screen didn't break in the prang etc.,. the sealant the screen is stuck in with means you're guaranteed to crack it before you can get it out.

So dealers and other secondary market glass are the only options.

Hi,

Thanks DOM for the great advise.

On Saturday I had a rock hit my screen and chip it just in front of the mirror. I was not happy but it was only a chip!

BIG PROBLEM on Sunday lunch-time when I went to go out, the sun had made the chip transform into a 40cm crack from the very top to about half way down!!

I now have go through the hassel of getting it replaced, but will use your advise.

Thanks

Re: Windscreen Replacement

One other thing I think is worth mentioning. Glass (and I would assume windscreen glass) needs to comply with Australian Standards. I can't believe that the glass would comply with the extreme distortions experienced by "cheap" glass as mentioned earlier in this thread...

I didn't go and check our X-Trail, but I remember years ago that windscreens (or at least the side window glass in the doors) had a triangle logo with the Australian Standards number on it. Might be worth checking...

Mine propagated exactly the same way. Looked like just a minor chip around 8 am about 5 cm in from the screen bottom edge, but by lunch time it was a 25 cm crack.

Hope your fix-up goes smoothly !

Cheers

DOM.
