posticon Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System (T30 X-TRAIL)

Image

Hi Guys,

As promised, I came back today from my 2 day trip to the Hi-Tech factory in Bathurst and here is the full and detailed report I promised you about the FULL exhaust system replacement offered by Hi-Tech.

I left Sydney on Thursday morning at 4:30am and headed to Bathurst, the drive was pleasant and there was not traffic at all, added to that I was running with a completely new exhaust system which includes the extractors, high flow stainless steel cat. converter, twin resonators and twin tail pipes, so the drive was even more pleasant on the highway and the high end power was awesome.

Got to Bathurst in about 2 hours and 20 minutes (was sticking to the speed limit in case you're wondering emoticon )

As soon as I arrived at the factory and was greeted by Lambros (Hi-Tech owner) and Dwayne and my exy was put on the "operating table AKA the hoist emoticon

Image

Here are some pics of the Hi-Tech factory. It is pretty impressive!

Image Image

The guys started to take off my existing extractors set-up, so they could use a template to make a "jig" (a term used for making a frame around the piping, flanges and the rest of the set-up to make a complete and ready made template for future production of the system without the need to measure anything)

As my extractors were manufactured on my exy in Sydney and all pipes were welded one by one, it was hard to remove them in one piece, so to remove the existing extractors they had to remove the radiator cooling fans and loosen the alternator and take them off (from the top of the engine bay)

Once the extractors were off, they were put on the "jig"

NOTE: Never mind the stripped paint. That was a failed attempt at making the extractors look a bit pretty when they were first fitted to my exy, only to realize that we used 300 degrees paint and the extractors get up to 800 degrees temperature emoticon

Image Image

Image Image

Next the guys removed the section with the cat. converter and the flexible pipe and put that on the jig too.

Image Image

Welding time started to make the new kits using those jigs/templates

Image

Here is the mandrel bend machine that is used to bend the extractors pipes.

Image Image Image

The new 4-2-1 Hi-Tech Extractors and the High Flow Cat. Converter has been made and here they're (FYEO-For Your Eyes Only) emoticon

 Image Image

Image Image

Note the position of the O2 sensor, it is in fact reading the heat of 2 cylinders as was pointed out before, but the reading is being taken from the 2nd and 4th cylinder, therefore ensuring that the heat of the entire engine block is getting measured evenly, so this will cause no issues at all and it is done exactly the same way with other extractors too.

It was time to test the new kit on my exy and see that everything fits in place correctly (and it did) what a perfect fit!

Image Image

Image Image

Day 2 involved taking the cat. back system off and testing a newly designed template which will see the "twins" set-up fit BOTH xtrails (with and without a towbar)

Image Image Image

Image Image Image

There are 2 resonators in the "twins" set-up to help reduce the noise level and they work perfectly in this regard.

This has concluded the testing phase and with everything fitting perfectly well using the new templates, production will now proceed as planned and the kit can be ordered at any time emoticon

My following post here will include the break-up of the system and pricing for both Australian and Overseas xtrailers.

I will do this tomorrow morning and it will include some very important facts which you will be amazed to find-out when compared to other major brands of extractors overseas and locally.

EDIT: All new Hi-Tech X-Trail Systems will have the new bullet shape resonators fitted instead of the old design shown above. There has been a design upgrade in terms of the shape of the resonators used in the system for toughness and durability reasons (read full details HERE). See below pics showing the new resonator type.

Part II- Facts about the System

The X-Trail exhaust system will be offered in the following combinations:

Extractors & Cat. for QR25DE Engines
============================================

This system will consist of the mandrel bent extractors is 4-2-1 configuration and it is made of highest grade stainless steel with the position of the O2 sensor located between cylinders number 2 and 4, ensuring an even temp. measurement across the entire engine block.

The system also includes a Stainless Steel Catalytic Converter made by CatCo USA

Image

This catalytic converter is stainless steel through-out and uses metal substrate and it ensures high flow of gasses coming from your engine using the 200 cells technology (compared to the factory 400 cells) and a flow-rate of 706.2CFM

It will completely eliminate the potential disintegration problem we're facing with our factory catalytic converter and for which we had a recall already (which has caused some engine damage and replacement)

This cat. converter is fully EPA compliant.

FACTS:

* Most of the overseas branded extractors & cat. systems use Mild Steel pipe construction and have them ceramic coated to look nice and shiny. There is no comparison at all to a full stainless steel system which Hi-Tech offers. Those extractors are usually priced at around $660US!

* Most if not all overseas and local systems use ceramic cat. converters. Again this where Hi-Tech exceeds expectations by using CatCo made of stainless steel, which prevents flaking.

* The temperature in the cat. converter could reach 800-900 degrees and this is what causes the factory cat. converter which has ceramic wall to disintegrate and the small pieces finding their way to your engine. CatCo cat converters eliminate this problem as there are no side-walls required with the full stainless steel system and they withstand that temperature with ease and peace of mind.

* Not all overseas and local brands are able to offer warranty on their systems against potential damage. Hi-Tech is so confident of their products that they will offer 10 (TEN) YEARS WARRANTY against rust and faulty workmanship on the full system and unlimited number of kms!

* Not all overseas and local brands can tell you their system is Emission Control and ADR compliant. Hi-Tech system is and it has passed all required EPA and ADR tests to gain this approval. This is a VERY important factor when you update your insurance policy.

* The reported and proven (by dyno tests) power gains of the extractors system is 24KW increase at the wheels and over 220Nm Torque!

Twin Tail Pipe System (Cat. back)
========================================

This system as you have seen before, will offer you the choice to replace the bulky looking factory muffler which is the lowest point on our xtrails with a complete cat. back system connecting to the factory extractors. It is a bolt on system and can be easily done at home!

The system offers a direct connection to the first flange on the pipe coming down from the factory extractors and then it is just a matter of bolting the rest of the kit on.

The twin system is suitable for all 2.5LT (QR25DE) engine types and for xtrails WITH and WITHOUT a towbar.

This mod will give you a power increase of around 8-9KW at the wheels over the factory system and will also eliminate the problem of the muffler being the lowest point.

Image

This will be the standard tail pipe configuration for all xtrails, as it has been noted that the spread tail-pipe config. offers the best sound level which is both deep and quiet.

The "twins" system also uses 2 stainless steel resonators (as seen in Part I of my report) this ensures that the dBA level remains within the ADR regulations and doesn't annoy you (or your wife) when traveling on the freeway.

FACTS:

* Most locally branded alternative twin systems offer mild steel construction, which is both plain looking and in most cases quite noisy. Hi-Tech system offers full stainless steel system and uses 2 resonators to address the noise level perfectly.

* It is very rare to expect major power gains as a result of cat. back upgrade, but with the Hi-Tech cat. back system, it has been proven by dyno test that the gains are 8-9KW at the wheels, which is pretty impressive for this type of upgrade. (dyno results below)

The following dyno test results will show you the Power & Torque comparison between the standard exy and the one with twins (around 8-9KW power gain at the wheels there)

Image

Full System Upgrade (The Works)
=======================================

This system will offer you the chance to upgrade the full exhaust system of your xtrail in one hit incorporating the above 2 stand-alone systems/upgrades. This is a much better alternative to explore the full power potentials of your QR25DE engine and eliminates the need to do further upgrades to a half system (should you choose to go that way).

NOTE: The pipe size used in the Hi-Tech system is 2 Inch, this ensures that no low-end power is lost compared to bigger size pipes. The X-Trail being a 4WD type of car, low end power is more important for everyday driving and there is plenty of high end power too, as we have seen at Bathurst where my auto reached 6000RPM for the last gear change emoticon

The second set of dyno results is the one of my exy (done this morning) showing a peak of 77.1KW at around 95kms/hour, but it is also showing 74KW at the common speed (between the 2 xtrails) of 90kms/hour

Image

This would translate to around 24KW extra compared to the standard exy and 16KW extra compared to an exy with the twins!!!

This concludes Part II of my report. The next post will include price breakdowns emoticon

Re: Hi-Tech X-Trail Extractors/Headers & Full Exhaust System

 Guys,

I cannot speak high enough of this mod. The 'test drive' that we ran just enforced what we already expected:

 AMAZING ACCELERATION FROM STANDSTILL. emoticon

2ND TO 3RD GEAR ACCELERATION IS UNBELIEVABLE. emoticon emoticon

INCREASE IN REVS BETWEEN EACH GEAR CHANGE, ABOUT 6000rpm IN AN AUTO (UNHEARD OF). emoticon emoticon emoticon

What this mod will do to the manual I think will blow your minds.

The chrome warrior has definitely got himself a 'one-of-a-kind' that will (if given the chance to), put many candy cars to shame.

I am already in deep financial consultation with the boss for my extractor and cat fitout.

Of course my opinions are totally independant and no money was exchanged.

ps: Jalal, I think we need a 'in-car' video of the beast showing its full potential.

No Problems Rich, just give me a buzz when you're ready.

You can tell Clare, you're going for an xtrail excursion or she can come and enjoy the ride too.

P.S. Members, please note that we will be conducting this test in a safe environment and away from traffic emoticon

Rich,

Don't worry if you can't get to Jalal's place because of Clare, emoticon

I've just placed an order for the Headers and Cat upgrade. So hopefully within the next couple of weeks, I'll have Silvia holding the camera and I'll be showing you guys what a "Manual" exy with the full kit can do..., emoticonemoticonemoticon

Noel,

It would also be great if you can dyno your exy before the extractors and after emoticon
