Dash LEDs Colour Change Project
Hi Guys,
Last week I managed to change the colour of auto transmission display board LED from the boring greenish/blue-ish colour to red, today I changed the LED of the air-con dials to red as well and they all look fantastic and really stand out.
The gear selection panel is very easy to do and all you need to remove is the plastic fascia and then the black cover surrounding the gear stick and you will have clear access to LED globe. I painted mine red in this case, because I couldn't find a red rubber cap (in my garage) but it had a blue rubber cap on it (from the factory)
The dash dials or air-con dials where a bit harder to do, as the control box itself is a bit hard to remove from its place (series I) once you take all screws off.
It takes a bit of shoving around to have this control box free in your hands, but as soon as this is done, the rest is easy.
You need to take off the black fascia covering the dials and then pop the control switches off (they come off easily using a screwdriver) then you can remove the illumination plate (the grey thing) and you will have access to 2 LEDs which are covered with a blue rubber cap. Take these rubber caps off and replace them with a red type and you will notice the difference straight away
My next project will involve change the heater and auto/4wd switch LEDs to red as well.
Here are some photos:

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
Same here Benn, I hated it when the LEDs where different colour and you'll probably laugh if I tell you that one of the reasons I upgraded to the series II CD stacker is because the LED display was orange compared to my Series I signle cd player which had the green LED (boring and out of place). hehehe

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
Hi Rich and all,
Well, I can happily confirm that Part 2 of my projects has now been successfully completed and the AUTO, 2WD, LOCK and Heater buttons have now been changed to bright red
This job was somewhat fiddly once I have taken-out the switches. I had to take them apart to get to the tiny LEDs and because these buttons are spring loaded, one the cover is removed (which was the hardest part of the mod) you have to be REALY careful not to loose any of the springs.
As with the other LEDs these had the blue rubber cap on them too (see pic below)
I decided to paint these LEDs in red, as there is no way I could find rubber caps that small.
3 LEDs in total have been colour changed and the result is awesome. They're so much clearer to see than the greenish colour.
I reckon Nissan should seriously re-think the LED colour scheme for the exy and they cay use this as an example
The dash dials have already been changed last year to bright red too but this will still be improved further as part of Part 3 of my project

Jalal,
Is there ANY part of your x-trail that you haven't change. Definitely 'CUSTOM'. LOL.
hehehe. There is no screw that has been left un-turned and no clip that I haven't attempted to un-clip LOL
My exy is probably getting the shakes everytime she sees me with a screwdriver...what now?? Not again!!!

Re: LEDs Colour Change Project
Previous Mod- Feb '05
Hi Guys,
Well, I just finished my experiment and I have to report that our clusters (Series I) have an orange (yellowish) filter fitted inside, which means that any globe colour modification beside the bright orange and bright red will not change the colour of the light coming through the dials.
I have tried everything besides converting to LEDs.
You can notice a difference between the colour of light coming through the numbers (pale red, bright orange) and the digital clock display (which is bright red)
My last experiment involved buying model car paint from Toys 'R Us and I have painted a couple of globes (which I bought for that purpose) in bright blue and bright red.
When I fitted the blue globe, the dials turned very pale purple and the light output was greatly affected (it was very dim)
When I fitted the globe that was painted in bright red, I got exactly the same nice and vibrant bright red colour coming through the dials (including the clock display).
So, I think I will stay with bright red, as I like it a bit more than the standard orange colour.
You can achieve the above either by painting the globe with the model car paint or buying the red 5mm rubber sleeves from repco or autobarn, but painting the globe will produce a brighter red light.
I have achieved this by using the orange rubber sleeves on the globes illuminating the numbers and painted the globe in bright red for the digital clock display.
I think it looks nice, especially at night time
