Re:

Hi John,

Can you please let me know how did you remove the front grille on your Series 3 exy? No matter how hard I tried to pull, it won't come off and I gave up trying. I also couldn't see the clips holding the grille in place to the bumper.

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Removing the grille from a Series 3.

Hi Jalal,
We have been out touring today, 500 klm round trip, just arrived back home now. You need to remove the top panel between the radiator and grille, this is only 6 scrivetts. In the upper most left corner and right corner looking from the front of the grille, is two 8mm holes. Behind these are two lock screws. Pull a little on the grille while rotating these screws anti clock about 45 degrees, you should hear them unclip. You also need to get your hand down just behind the grille where the two vertical uprights are, you will feel a couple of tabs. Push the tabs in while appling pressure to the grille outwards. You need to work one side then the other. To re install, I found it best to pull those screw locks out of the body and clip them into place in the grille, I think it makes the process easier.

Hope this helps.
Regards
John

Re: Removing the Grille Series 3

Hi Jalal,
If you click on this picture and use the zoom feature at photobucket, you can see the six rectangular areas where those clips I was talking about, go into. There are no clips going vertical, so once you pop each of these clips it should just come forward and out. A picture tells it all. Don't forget abouit the release screws in the top corners.

Re:

Thanks John, yep, I found/saw the rectangular slots with the clips going through them, but I didn't know about the release screws in the top corners. Anyway, I don't think I need to remove the grille anymore (at this stage) as my radiator protection was fitted for me by the guys who fitted my nudge bar yesterday when they had the front bumper off emoticon

Re: Radiator Protection

Hi all.
I was reluctant to attempt removal of front bumper to install radiator protection mesh so I decided to install the mesh to the outside of the 2 bumper cavities and only on the inside to the grill which is easily removed.

Pic 1 - Grill and mesh pieces cut to suitable shape.

Image

Note 1: The narrow bumper cavity mesh was cut 100mm longer than length of narrow cavity opening. This allowed me to bend 50mm back at each end and then I was able to reach my hand into back of cavity and bend the ends back on themselves to hook around tjhe end of the plastic bumper, This secured each end. I used small blaclk cable ties to support mesh to the 3 strenghening pillars in the cavity.

Note 2: The larger bumper cavity mesh was cut to exact shape and size of the cavity. I used 5 modified bobby pins to secure the mesh to the 5 upright cavity stregthening pillars. (Didn't use cable ties because can't get hands behind mesh in cavity without removing bumper) The ends of the mesh needed no further securing and fitted snugly.

Pic 2 - Installed bumper cavity meshes

Pic 3 - Mesh pieces fitted on inside of grill using black cable ties, Small holes were drilled into the grill vanes to accomodate cable ties.

Pic 4 - Finished mesh installation

I am quite happy with the finished installation although it may not look as slick as mesh installed on the inside of bumper cavities.......such is life but it was a darn easy mod.

cheers

Re: Radiator Protection

Hi guys.
Popped my Xtrail mod cherry this arvo !
Got the silver mesh and installed it on my 04 exy. Like you guys said enough for bottom, middle and grill in one 1200x280 sheet.
I thought my air con radiator looked bad but after seeing some pics of other nasty radiators im happy with it.
Just zip ties all round and no silicone yet. It seems pretty solid with out silicone but will wait and see.
Did plan on a spearfish this arvo instead of working on me car but a 5m croc chased some local out of the water. So car work seemed like a good option. Love the tropics !

Re:

I didn't need any silicone when I fitted the mesh on my T30 and it held in place pretty well for years with the zip ties.

Re: Radiator Protection

I had a Tuff bull bar fitted, it came with mesh to protect the radiator etc. from stones, but after a warm days driving in May and checking radiator, there were quite a few bugs. So I fitted the most open pergola cloth you can get and fitted it to cover all radiator areas. I have seen this on a lot of 4wd, hope it's ok. will keep check on temp.
Initially I put in eyelets in the cloth at close intervals and roped it together. Did not work.
Then I put eyelet in each corner of the newly cut cloth (less work and less time) and cable tied to the mesh, this worked a treat and looks great.
Even the wife is impressed how neat it looks. (This is a Must)
Not too sure how to put up a photo yet.
