Re: "Piggy Back" ECU

$300 seems very well priced compared to $1200+ for the UniChip (price from 5+ years ago). Jalal, I am likely to see Andrew tonight so will mention it to him and get him to give you a call or reply to this thread.

Silverwater Automotive Services tunes a heap of different brand aftermarket engine management computers but I didn't notice Apexi in their list. http://www.dynotuning.com.au

Yes Rich,

The Unichip is indeed expensive as it hasn't been tuned for an exy before.

I am currently in contact with AutoTech who have dealt with both the Unichip and Apexi and we'll see what they say.

Re: "Piggy Back" ECU

Didn't see Andrew tonight, but I did remember the name of another tuning place at Silverwater that does tune Apexi - Advan Performance - http://www.advan.co.nz I dealt with them several years ago when I arranged a track-day with them at Wakefield Park near Goulburn...

Thanks Rich, browsing through the Advan website, it seems they only have a 2WD dyno.

Jalal,
Do you REALLY need to have a 4wd dyno for tuning if you pull the 4wd relay ?
After all, you are tuning the engine, not the powertrain.

I guess not Kev, but I don't like pulling-out any relays and prefer to have the exy dynoed the way it is emoticon

Re: "Piggy Back" ECU

OK Guys,

I got in touch with AutoTech and spoke to the owner who was very helpful.

He gave me some valuable advice regarding the choice of piggy back ECU and stated that while the Apexi SAFC is very good when it comes to altering the fuel map and would most certainly give positive results, it does not have the capability to alter ignition timing, so when the new fuel maps are in place, the factory ECU will automatically advance timing to compensate. This could result in knocking (pinging)

There are ways around that as he stated but it is not perfect.

So, I asked him about the GReddy piggy back and he stated that the best option would be the GReddy Ultimate, as it does both fuel and timing maps, but unfortunately and because this product is still new, they have not yet made it to work with our engine type.

The next on list would be the GReddy e-manage, which can do both as well but will require an additional ignition harness to be able to control the timing. This can be done.

His final recommendation and which he insisted would be the best solution with proven results, is the Unichip or the Haltech Interceptor or a Unichip. He said it can provide great control over fuel and timing maps and can be easily fitted and tuned.

He said, with the type of mods I currently have on my exy and for an NA engine, the power gains as a result of adjusting the fuel and timing maps using the piggy pack can be expected to be within the 15-20KW range!

We discussed the cost of this little project and no matter what option I would choose the cost would approx. be $1,500 (fitted and dyno tuned)

I think it is a pretty serious power gain which if added to my existing power would give me an overall 147HP (or 110KW) at the wheels!! This is not a joke.

I am now eagerly waiting for my tax return cheque and I am going a head with this project. emoticon

110kw atw is awesome for a NA 4 cyl! I had a mx6 turbo a few years back and that only managed 100 atw

it is a bit pricey, but you have come this far you may as well get everything you can out of the motor.

Looking foward to see how it all goes!

Re: "Piggy Back" ECU

The good thing about using a programmable ECU is that settings can be changed when any more modifications are made. Some "chips" are preset and can't be reprogrammed, but I don't think you have considered any of them (not sure what the Haltech device is).

110kw @ the wheels I would assume to be a front-wheel estimate, not all wheels. This is still a very good figure; I had 109kw @ front wheels on my pulsar, which was 4kw more than factory-claimed flywheel output. The X-Trail is only a few hundred kg heavier than the pulsar, so the performance difference wouldn't be too much different...

Bring it on!

HERE is the Haltech piggy back.

We only considered upgradeable chips and piggy backs which can be upgraded using a laptop.

It will be 110KW at whatever the AUTO mode gives me emoticon This is the way I dynoed my exy before starting from 4WD mode which changed to AUTO and I believe it is not only front wheels.
