WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

My insurance renewal for 20th Dec arrived in my post box yesterday so I decided I had better tell them about my mods so they could adjust the renewal if necessary.

Well, guess what, they cannot cover me with the mods I have had and have cancelled my current policy with 7 days notice!! emoticon

Now I need to quickly get a policy arranged to start from the 11th. I did an online quote with Justcar that is very close to my renewal premium even with the mods declared.

So, PLEASE, if you are considering any mods to your car please check with your insurer first!
If you don't and then need to claim you could find yourself uninsured.

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

I just called my insurance company about the exhaust and the lift. The had no problem with mine as long as I am older than 30....that was AAMI. They also insure my stereo with no problem as long as it does not exceed 20% of the value of the car. Maybe Adam call call them and ask.

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

Hmm, I just tried to get a quote from AAMI and it was refused due to the mods! Even more confusing is that Just Car are quite happy with it ... and they are underwritten by AAMI!!!! What the ... ?!

These damn insurance companies have us by the short and curlies! emoticon

You got refused? You under 25? I just added those mods on my policy, including exhuast and lift spacers.

But what exhaust do you have? I have a custom cat-back system valued at $900.

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

They did not even ask what exhaust I had. Did not ask how much and etc. They insure my $15000 stereo with no problem. So I don't think $900 exhaust is a problem.................

$15,000 stereo?!!! emoticon

I was very precise about the exhaust I have and even stated that it is not performance enhancing but they did not like it.

Oh well, looks like I will go with Just Car for now, at least they won't mind the turbo next year! emoticon

Re: WARNING! Modifications and Insurance

Adam, I have a fairly etensive list of mods which include the exhaust & custom made extractors. I have had the unfortunate experience of having to make a claim ($11,000) & was covered no worries. The insurance company knows of these mods & have no worries in covering them. I am with the RACV which I believe is owned by NRMA now? may be worth a phone call to NRMA

Good luck
Phil
