posticon Products to avoid #1: Pioneer iPod interface

Well to say I am dissapointed is an understatement. Having taken my time and done extensive research into the manufacturers that make iPod interfaces for their head units, I decided to go for the top of the range Pioneer (DEH-P8650MP) with the CD-IB100 iPod interface.

Stupid me did not even consider that I should actually get a demo of an iPod connected to the unit, why would I - this is a Pioneer made interface and the head unit has a large colour OEL display, how could they possible "stuff" it up??

Well, they well and truely have!

I would just like to say they the head unit itself is great, the sound quality in the car even with stock speakers, has improved considerably. And it looks great.

But, the iPod interface only sends the first 8 characters of the Artist, Album or Track name to the head unit!!! What the ... ??? And there is only 1 line of display too, so trying to navigate through any of the lists is a joke especially as you have to click for each move, no scrolling.

I can't stress this enough, if you are thinking of getting this type of setup DON'T GO THE PIONEER ROUTE!

If you are not wanting an iPod interface though then the Pioneer units are really good.

Apparently there might be an updated iPod interface coming out next year sometime but there are no firm dates.

I am now going to look at what I can replace it with and it has only been in the car for 2 days. emoticon

Re: Products to avoid #1: Pioneer iPod interface

Maaaate! I wish i had of read this post a couple of days ago! My young fella bought one of those things last week and had the un-enviable task of installing a complete sound system in his car ('94 Swifty GTI)yesterday.
I told him about the shortcomings of the interface but, as he had bought and paid for the thing on special from AutoBarn there wasn't going to be a refund. But anyway, after 10 hours work installing a Pioneer Head unit, 2 Amps,2 Subbies, 2 6x9's,2x 4'' a couple of crossovers and 2 tweeters it was all finally jammed in there! We ended up installing the interface in the gap between the top of the glovebox and the underside of the dash, just a small slit appears in the glovebox to plug into the Ipod itself. Wish he had just returned it and said sorry!

I guess if it doesn't operate to specs' there may still be a chance of getting rid of it.
Thanks for the heads up emoticon

Re: Products to avoid #1: Pioneer iPod interface

If I were you I'd be contacting Pioneer directly for an explanation. In this day and age of technology, no-one in their right mind would restrict song/file names to just 8 characters - we're not living in the 80's anymore!

Perhaps they have a way of upgrading the firmware on their headunits (I know it's possible with many other electronic devices (and they may be able to do it as simply as using a CD that you put into the head unit which contains special code that the Cd player recognises to update itself).

Now I wonder if other manufacturers (Alpine, Clarion etc) have similar deficiencies to the Pioneer you've informed us about.

It's been several years since I've kept up-to-date with all that's available in the car audio world, but I'm sure Alpine wouldn't do something like this...

Hi Adam,

The 8 character limit is something that Pioneer have described in the features of the iPod interface on their web site HERE

It doesn't sound like this is a glitch, as this is how Pioneer have designed it.

That's true Jalal and would not be so bad if the following statement (also in on that page) were true ...

"with the ability to scroll additional information"

.. sadly it is not. emoticon

Also, the main product page ...

http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/car_entertainment/accessories/cdib100/index.html

.... states 16 character display! Confusing to say the least.

Hi Adam,

I see. It is confusing of them to be advertising this product with 2 different sets of features.

You have a good case to approach them about it with these 2 links and ask for an explanation.

Re: Products to avoid #1: Pioneer iPod interface

Update to this and a correction ...

Having spent some time in J&B HiFi this lunchtime I now understand the situation a bit more. It turns out that the head unit is limiting the display to 8 chars not the iPod interface. Even though the DEH-P8650MP is still their current top line model, it was designed before the iPod interface. The newer, lower in the range, models have scrolling text capability. Also the 7" touch screen dvd model connected to the same iPod interface unit provides a display pretty much like the iPod display, so it is providing all the info required to the head unit.

It seems the only way I will get the full control I want through the head unit at the moment is to go for the AVH-P5750DVD, which is a pretty awesome unit but a lot more than I was looking to pay. emoticon

So I take back what I say, the interface module itself is not to blame here. Pioneer's sneaky marketing of it on the other hand ....

Well the bank and my CFO at home have both signed off on a replacement unit. The 8650 is en-route back to where it came from and the new unit should be with me tomorrow or early next week! emoticon

More to follow ....

Cool Adam.

Can I please ask that your CFO organise a meeting with my CFO, so they both work from the same agenda? hehehe emoticon

Is THIS what you're getting?

You will have to wait until next week to find out. emoticon

It has been confirmed that it will be sent out tomorrow once the other unit has been delivered back, so should be with me on Monday.
