Re: my stereo stage 2!

I decided to post this question here rather than Brett's new thread as it's probably more relevant to this thread seeing as you already have photos of the replacement speakers above...

Brett mentioned in his thread the depth of the speaker only being 2 inches. I wondered how much space there was between the speaker surround (or mid-mounted tweeter; whatever is the furthest-protruding part of the speaker), and the inside of the door trim panel. The reason I ask is because I made use of that space in my Pulsar to fit 8inch (diameter!) speakers in the door by making up a couple of spacer rings (made of MDF, then painted to help reject moisture), to allow a deeper speaker to be installed in the door, while not having to damage/modify the door trim (well at least not visibly, when the panel is back in it's normal position).

EDIT: On second thoughts, it's probably better I copy this to Brett's thread as it does appear to be more relevant there emoticon

Re: my stereo stage 2!

Matt,
How hard/easy was it to remove the front seats. I have got my hands on some sound proofing and want to run it under the carpet. Any tips for an old mate. emoticon

Re: my stereo stage 2!

seat are easy to get out.

Remove the trim from around the rails, this can be a bit tricky, they just bend and clip out, it looks wrong at first but dont be scared to bend them!

Take the front bolts out,

Slide the seat as far foward as it can go, tilt the back of the seat foward

Take the rear bolts out

On S2, unclip the seat belt light plug (not sure if S1 has this)

Lift the seat out the front door, Be carefull as they are a bit heavy. Make sure you dont scratch the car with the seat rails!

Hi Brett,

What sound-proofing did you get ?
Thinking of some myself and wondered if the (heavy) mat or (lighter) paint-on stuff was best.

Re: my stereo stage 2!

Kev,

I intend to use both the paint-on product as well as the underlay.

I got the K&H bitumen based sound deadener for $15 1L from SuperCheap and also 4 metres of sound proofing mat from ClarkeRubber for $75. The matting is in the 3 layers; foam, bitumen and silver dimpled foil on top. It is about 15mm thick, so it should do the job nicely.

But I think most of the noise in the xtrail actually comes through the doors, so this should also be looked at. I have removed my door covers to insert some speakers and drove to Bathurst last night. It was the noisiest trip of my life and there appeared to be air/noise coming in via the door.

In have applied the bitumen base paint to the back of the door covers and intend to also spray inside the door with a similar product.

I know it will never be 'whisper quiet', but... emoticon
