Have you considered fitting a wind-deflector like those on the prime-movers when hauling a high-top trailer taller than the cabin. It reduces the wind-drag at high speeds

Re:

I have, but it's basically pointless as I'll be putting a full length roof rack on eventually. The setup I have at the moment is basic but effective for camping in general, just not touring. The rooftop tent tent sits in just two crossbars for now. There's nowhere to even mount oone

Re: Vehicle Roof Top Tents

DAM YOU FACTORY NISSAN ROOF RACKS!!!! emoticon

Purchased a second hand ARB Simpson 3 roof top tent today only 12 months old but only slept in 4 times for a bargain $800! Tent is in mint condition.

So I set to work pulling off my roof basket which has a custom bracket to hold my tred recovery tracks. I plan to sell these to purchase a set of maxtrax instead.

Anyways I had to make up some new steel brackets to hold the RTT to the roof racks as it came with a rhino setup which i couldn't use. Long story short I made all the brackets and moved my side awning to its outer limit and the tent won't bloody fit on.

The nissan roof racks don't go to the edge of the car as they angle down to the mounting points on the roof. If they were square as the rhino mounts are then I would be laughing. Off to auto one in the morning for some rhino bars and a few hundred more dollars.

Re:

Check eBay or Gumtree first, as you might get lucky with finding a 2nd hand set of Rhino bars.

I looked on ebay and they were the same price as the rhino website. Auto one has a 20% off sale on rhino gear this week emoticon

Re: Vehicle Roof Top Tents

Just purchased the suitable rhino heavy duty bars from auto one, 20% off came to $292. Being in Broome they didn't have the correct feet in stock so have to wait a week for them to arrive emoticon

So next week I should be able to mount the roof top tent and awning again emoticon

Re: Vehicle Roof Top Tents

My factory roof racks have a slight curve in them. As in they are higher in the middle than they are on the edges.

I want to put a rooftop tent on them, but was wondering how people overcame the problem of this curve?

I'm thinking it'll just be as simple as using a packing piece on the edges to match the same height as the middle section.

But reading the post above - it seems width might be the limiting factor.
Damn, looks like I'll have to buy some flat rhino racks instead.

Next question - how do I unlock the factory ones as I'm positive I didn't get a key for them.

Re: Vehicle Roof Top Tents

My T31 Nissan roof bars have a key code number on the lock where the key goes. Yours should have a number and perhaps a well appointed locksmith may have access to blank keys that can be cut to suit the code. Else you just may have to contact Nissan and ask them about key replacement.
Having said that when I eventually have to replace my T31 I will ensure that whatever I buy will have the flat extended and adjustable roof bars fitted, either as a purchase optional extra ( depending on cost) or I will buy after market. In many instances over the past 11 years I have found the curved bars that don't extend past the mounting bracket to be a real pain in the rrrrrrrr's when tying down all sorts of things such as timber, canoes, PVC tubing, plaster board, mattress etc etc etc etc.

cheers and good luck

Re: Vehicle Roof Top Tents

My Series 1 T30 was fitted with factory roof bars and they did not have a locking key, rather a special T-spanner to undo the tamper-proof bolts.
If yours are the same then the head of these bolts is a T27H, Torx bit (hex-star with hole in the centre). You can usually find them in many multi-purpose screwdriver kits.
