Exhaust Tailpipe Mod (Cosmetic Only)
So what have people done to make their ugly tailpipe look more presentable?
Without costing you an arm and a leg. Just a cosmetic addition/modification with out having to change the entire exhaust system.
Any photos you have would be great.
This is what I currently have, and I hate it. It looked better before the chrome tip.
These are a couple of photos I got from Jalal of modified tailpipes.
The one on the left is a dummy and does nothing. This X-Trail is also from Malaysia.
Now I’ve been doing some ringing around to some exhausts places around town. I spoke extensively to the owner of perhaps the largest muffler place in Cairns and also a good friend of the family, and I could have this job done for around $300-350 with unpolished stainless steel and basic tips.
Which also did not include the Tig weld of the tips to the tailpipes.
I was advised to steer clear of Chrome (because of rust) and go for stainless steel, which costs around $80/meter unpolished.
The other option I was advised was to go standard tailpipe and paint black and have the stainless steel tips, (cheaper option).
Or better still, get rid of the entire muffler and go for a slimline or sports muffler. But this was more expensive still.
Jalal, do you think it’s possible to have this mod made in Malaysia and freighted over here, and have the locals just fit it? Must be cheaper to order from overseas?

It's definitely cheaper to do in Malaysia and I think I mentioned to you before that it costs around $100AUS to have it done there.
The problem is shipping, as am sure it's not gonna be cheap due to the size of the item.
Let me check

Re: Exhaust Tailpipe Mod (Cosmetic Only)
Thanks Shane, I saw that one, but I'm after the staineless steel look.
I liked the idea of reducing the muffler size though from what Xtrailing has done, so I'll be going that way as well.

Re: Exhaust Tailpipe Mod (Cosmetic Only)
Shane,
I saw this one from Xtrailing as well, but if I recall correctly, this is not the standard muffler.
I think it's a sports muffler with twin tailpipes.
Look great, and maybe what I might end up doing. Just tring to get by as cheap as I can.
Cheers

Re: Exhaust Tailpipe Mod (Cosmetic Only)
Hi Noel,
I'll be receiving a quote on this from Malaysia by early next week
I have asked for a quote for exactly the same design (i.e. twin pipe)

Re: Exhaust Tailpipe Mod (Cosmetic Only)
Thanks Xtrailing,
The Exhaust place up here commented that the X-Trail did seem to have a rather large rear muffler for a small vehicle.
He also commented that the X-Trails rear muffler is a bad design and appears to be an after thought by Nissan, which I'd have to agree with.
For a 4x4 vehicle, the muffler is useless, as it will be one of the first things to bottom out.

Re: Exhaust Tailpipe Mod (Cosmetic Only)
Hi Noel and all,
The cosmetic tailpipe mod as shown exactly in that pic above and in full stainless steel, done locally in Sydney or QLD, would cost $220.
I have obtained this quote from the muffler place in Sydney I stumbled across this morning (check the performance thread for full details)
They guy said it would achieve nothing but good looks and I told him, yes, this exactly what I want it for
Still waiting for the quote from Malaysia, but I reckon it wont be cheaper than this anyway once you include shipping.
The place that does them in Sydney is Hitech Mufflers
The QLD Branch address is:
