Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
It's a manual;
The run was rather impressive, about a 40 degree gradients, 150-200 meter runs with erosion blocks to cross every 20 meters then a hair pin turn & you start all over again. No gravel just steep & very rocky.
Decided it was rather serious as there is a warning at the start of the track;
"For experienced drivers only, please don't use this track unless you have provisions for extra food / water, matches a flare & whistle."
The xtrail performed very well although I now have a few scratches on the under carriage & a couple of dints in the muffler!

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?

=============================================
have a Nissan X-Trail Ti purchased in June 2003.
My beach driving experience with this car has not been good. It seems that when you are driving in soft sand after 20 minutes the 4WD light comes on and the car switches into 2WD front wheel drive only.
Last weekend (Sunday 20th March 05) I went for a drive along Stockton beach and the problem was happening. It took almost 1 1/2 - 2 hours for me to get from the North end to the Ship Wreck (approx 30 Kms).
I have taken my car back to the dealer many times to get it fixed and they have always said that they can't fix the problem unless they could replicate it.
The dealer has finally contacted the Nissan Technical department and this is what they have said:
" Your vehicle will only maintain the 4x4 mode for approximately 20mins in sand before switching off due to potential overheating of the rear differential. This is a safety feature of the vehicle's driveline."
Their response is that the vehicle is functioning as designed and cannot be fixed.
Have you experienced this problem with your x-trail? If not is it the series 2?
I really want to get it fixed because it prevents me from doing the things that I intended to do when I bought the vehicle.
I would be interested in doing beach trips but I would probably slow down the rest of the group not to mention potential damage to my car.
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hi ado5 and welcome to the forums.
As Shane (titanx04) mentioned previously we were in a group of 3 xtrails exisiting Stockton/Anna Bay on the 20th of March at around 10:00am and 2 xtrails were also driving with us for a period of time and we thought that you may be one of those xtrails
Anyway, I have a series I ST and I haven't had the overheating problem throughout our adventure on Stockton beach, I was even driving in Lock mode for a while (more than 45 minutes) when the guys told me that Auto is good enough, so I switched back to Auto and stayed on it for the whole day.
Shane however did get the flashing signal, but I guess he would be best to comment about it himself.
Hope to catch-up with you on our future trips.
Where are you located?

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hi Shane and Ella,
I have been troubleshooting this problem since I bought the car about 22 months ago and the responses I have gotten from the dealer have really started to annoy me.
I don't drive on the beach very often but I like surfing and purchased the car so that I can.
My X-Trail is the series 1 and has the three push button 4WD system. I've been trying to find out if they changed the system behind the nob when they changed the dash.
After reading this forum it appears that the problem doesn't occur for everyone which is good as it should be fixable.
My model is a manual Ti.
Don't know where to go with this but I'm not going to accept that it is normal operation.
I've tried using the auto 4wd mode and the problem still happened.
Please let me know how your continued testing goes.

Re: X-trail's 4wd system overheating problem ?
Hi Jalal,
From what I'm hearing from others in this forum it doesn't appear to be a problem with all x-Trails which would be great news because it should be able to be fixed if this is the case.
Unfortunately I wasn't one of the other x-Trails you saw on the 20th. I didn't see any other x-Trails. If I did see you I would have tried to discuss this problem with you.
I was using a tire pressure of about 14 psi and wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. The friend I was with definately agreed with me that the problem shouldn't be happening.
In regards to meeting up sometime that would be great
