Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi guys,

Wondering if anybody out there has installed parking sensors on their exy?
Have noticed a few on but most of them look rather cheap and nasty emoticon

Cheers

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi Weigen.

This is the "other half" of Fishy05 here.

I put the "Bosch ParkPilot" on our Xtrail after two very embarrassing reversing incidents.

Having back and neck problems, its sometimes hard to turn far enough to see behind as I reverse, and with the Xtrail the reversing lights are too high/dim to help in a partially lit car park at night when its raining. The rear bumper cost me $660 to repair after the second incident, and I was too scared to drive safely afterwards.

I booked in to get the ParkPilot the day I picked up the car from the crash repairers.

The sensors on my burgundy model are colour coded - the installers had already checked the compliance plate for paint colour so that the sensors match exactly.

I can flick the switch when towing so that the sensors don't go off.

It makes a short beep whenever I put the car in reverse (inaudible outside the car), then cuts in when I am 1.5 metres away from obstacles either behind me or to the side. When it starts to beep it goes slowly, and the light indicator on the rear pillar (visible through the rear vision mirror without turning my head) goes green. The closer I get to the obstacle the faster it beeps, and the more green LED lights I can see. The red LED lights come on when I am almost too close, and the beeping changes to a solid sound when I need to stop.

I wouldn't be without it now - just wish I had got it earlier.

Don't have the exact price, but it cost about the same as the bumper repair (and is much cheaper than stress management courses!. It took half a day for them to instal and check it worked correctly.

Apart from the Xtrail, its the best investment I ever made!!!

Hope this helps.

Anita

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi Russ,

I second Anita (Hi, Anita emoticon ) on everything she said.

The reverse parking sensors should be made mandatory on all cars.

I have already been saved twice by them and it's not because am a bad driver, but sometimes your mind goes to places where it shouldn't and it only takes a second for an accident (no matter how silly it is) to happen.

I have bought my set-up from eBay and you can find the details about it in THIS thread.

The sensors already came colour coded and the guy was selling them in black, white, silver and some other colour (can't remember)

Nearly all of the ones on eBay can be colour-coded to match your exy and you don't have to spend mega bucks on such an important accessory.

Here is how mine look fitted

Image

You can get a simple system like mine or you can spend a bit more and get the one with the reverse camera if you like.

I find the system I have is quite adequate for that added protection and peace of mind.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi guys (and gals, welcome Anita emoticon)

I'd like to think I'm not usually the easily-led type, but I just bought a parking sensor system on eBay, after reading all your comments.

The brand is Pyle, apparently a US company, and it looked ok. And for $45 + $20 postage, I can't really complain emoticon The sensors are black, but I don't think this will be that noticeable on my dark blue.

Not sure whether to have a go at installing it myself - I installed central locking on my old Ford Corsair, and it only took a day and a half emoticon

Cheers
Brenton

Good stuff Brenton.

They''re Ok to fit yourself, but you gonna have to remove the rear bumper, so you know where to drill a hole for the sensors.

Sorry, there isn't a DIY for this one on the forum.

I had mine done by my local auto electrician for around $80 or so.

Re: Aftermarket parking sensors

Hi,all, yes i am going to purchase a set of reversing sensors as i have just reversed into a round object and my stress levels are very high at the moment.Damage to rear right hand corner, not that bad,but a lot more than i expected as i was only going very slow.Modern vechicles are really just made to fall to pieces as if i had had my old hi-lux 4wd with its wonderfull solid rear bumper i would have not noticed it at all.Off to the panel people next week, and i will put some money into the economy..What one do you recomend?I have felt since i owned my x-trail that the rear vision when reversing is poor and i have just not got around to buying and installing a electronic reversing aid. This little reversing acident is the last straw and i might have to make a claim on AAMI,the first for about 20 years.I will be fitting a gadget as soon as i work out which one to choose.I have no dought that if i had a reversing alarm fitted i would not have had the minor accident,i agree all cars should have them fitted from new,and insurance companies should support this with lower fees.I am alright but just a little bit mad at myself,as what i done was stupid, and totally my fault.CHeers duxbac

I wouldn't mind one of those, either. Laast time I backed into somebody I lost my no claims bonus. Mind you, I was a lot higher up then and the Corolla wasn't there when I parked.
