Re: Got bass?

Thanks for editting my photos post, Jalal (it still looked fine (non-widescreen) on the browser I was using, though).

Driftking - that sub box looks abit big for a couple of 10's - is it an isobaric enclosure (so the subs are inside the box and you can't touch the cones)?

Re: Got bass?

Yes i think that that's the name of the setup. I tried the other one where you could touch the cones, but with this setup I feel that the subwoofer push the air in a more efficient way.

posticon Re: Got bass?

To be in the same line... I just got my new X Trail, and priority first, install my sound system in. Head Unit Alpine CDC-9835, the front and rear doors Alpine SPX-170R, the AMPLIFIER... hummm, Memphis Bell 1600, and the sub, a memphis MClass 12' dual voice coil. Sound is GREAT, the head Unit is one of the best I've seen, and the amplifier... just awesome... pictures to come later!

Re: Got bass?

Rich,

I think your the man to answer my questions here mate, but anyone else with experience, please jump in.

How easy is it to hook up an Amp to the standard exy headunit. "What goes where ?" is basically what I am after.

I have been given some good 3 way speakers and better 'Kicker' ones for the rear.

 ANY info available is appreciated.

Thankyou to all, and to all, a good night.

Re: Got bass?

You will need a speaker wire to rca converter, unless the stock s1 deck has rca out.

Rich will be able to explain this better than me........

You might just be better off changing the deck, there are some good ones out atm that dont cost a stack of money ( but stick to a good brand, pioneer, clarion etc )

Re: Got bass?

Brett,

You can hook up an amp to the speaker wires of a head unit (with converter) but there is an underlying problem with this, the signal coming out the unit on the speaker wires has already been amplified by the amp in the head unit, putting this through another amp can end up with a quality loss.

Ideally you should hook up an amp to a head unit's pre-out's (output signal before the internal amp) so you get a pure signal that you can then put through the amp.

Needless to say the factory head unit does not have pre-out's.

Re: Got bass?

Adam & Matt have pretty much summed it up.

I could correct Adam in saying that it's not really quality that is affected by amplifying an already-amplified signal - the problem is that there is more chance of clipping the signal, meaning that the signal wave is converted from AC to DC, which kills speakers (tweeters especially).

If you use the speaker-to-line-level converter, it's best to extend the speaker wires than running the RCA wires through the car, to minimise interference. Wiring could become abit messy, having to run new wires back to each speaker (easiest to connect new wires onto the factory wiring loom near the door than try and run new wires through into the doors).

Then there's the power wires (there's a nice big spare grommet in the firewall at passenger's side footwell).

Only other issue is the "remote turn on" for the amplifier - you don't want it to stay on 24/7 draining your battery - easiest method is to find a switched ignition wire somewhere in the car and extend it to the amplifier.

If that all sounds like gobbledegook, let me know and I'll try and explain it in more simple terms emoticon
