Got bass?

Clare's been away since Saturday morning, so I've had abit of spare time to start on the sub box... and I finally put it in yesterday afternoon/last night.

I've taken some photos but haven't got them onto the PC yet...

Took it for a test-drive tonight and while it still needs adjustment to the gain, crossover levels, and phase alignment, it sounds ok. I haven't turned it right up yet, as I would rather do that in a safe, controlled environment (away from home, and not while driving) so I can see if the sub is bottoming-out etc...

I have mentioned the box in another thread, but I can't remember which thread it was (maybe it was the yahoogroup?). I basically came up with 3 different designs: one was a pretty much 1 cubic foot sealed to sit in the right hand corner next to the 12v power outlet, or a "wedge" style to sit directly behind the back seats, or the "boot floor" method, which is the one I decided on, then modified so it wasn't as large (and only takes up about half the floor area, as will be seen from the photos when I get them online maybe later this week). It's a snug fit between the strut towers, so it isn't going anywhere in a hurry. I just have to keep an eye on it to see if it moves backwards under hard acceleration...

I wanted to make it easily removable, but I already know it's going to be way too heavy for Clare to remove on her own... I still need to get a 35 or 50mm crimper or one of those "blow-torch" adaptors for my BBQ gas bottle as that would certainly get hot enough to melt the solder - my little refillable gas soldering iron wont get hot enough to heat up the big crimp lug that goes inside the "Anderson" brand forklift-charger style plug. Sticking with the "removable" theme, I also want to mount a couple of recessed handles into the back of the box; once all the plugs are installed for connections to the box (amp power, turn-on, and audio inputs for the amp), it really should be able to be removed in under 60 seconds. The cargo blind keeps the theft risk to a minimum - you wouldn't know if the box is in the boot or not!.

Amp is a Schneider Quantum 3000T and the sub is a Clarion 12inch with one of those big fat surrounds (similar to my old Earthquake Magmas). I got the speaker level inputs for the amp (running through a speaker-to-line level converter) from the rear passenger's side door speaker (wires in the bottom of the "B" pillar (photos taken, of course), and I also got the turn-on for the amp from the same plug (which is the +ve for the window winder, and only becomes alive when the ignition key is in the 2nd accessories position, which I may decide later to change so it works on the 1st accessories position (I;ll have to find another wire in the loom)).

I've still got to make up the trim plate to sit on the box and protect the sub and amp from scratches, shopping, etc. If my previous boxes are any indication, it could remain in "MDF trim" for a couple of years before I get around to finishing it off emoticon

Re: Got bass?

I haven't had a chance to tune it properly yet... It still sounds abit out-of-phase with the factory speakers in the doors, and therefore cancelling-out abit of the bass.

Re: Got bass?

Rich,

I was attempting to do exactly what you have described with a set up of mine.I installed an anderson plug (bought a little gas blow torch from bunnings and some meaty pliers to hang onto the plug),melted a pool of solder and set the 4g into it but when i ran the radio after this the subs sounded absolutly shite!.Not being the experienced type with electricity,i assumed that there was to much resistance in the plug and the drop in voltage was such that the subs were not getting enough power?? The connections were fine so i have assumed that i have to find somewhere to permanently mount the big monoblock somewhere in the car.If you have the plugs installed and sounding good i would be very grateful for info as to how you went.
The boxes i ported and were 1.58ci by memory. If the cargo blind is covering them it vibrates badly,so i usually just have it folded back.

Re: Got bass?

weigen,

Where did you get your negative for the amplifier from? If the negative connection is not good, there is a chance the amplifier is powering on and off when the bass hits, due to the current draw. You could run it all the way back from t he battery, but this is a waste of cable and money and time, as you can get the negative from pretty much anywhere on the car's body/chassis. I drilled an 8mm hole in the bracket which the bottom of the back passenger's side seat clips into, then used a large lug (I have a handful of those fancy gold-plated ones with allen-key screw) and bolted it through the hole in the bracket (after I'd sanded the paint away from where the lug was going to make contact with the bracket).

Without knowing exactly what you mean by yours sounding no good, it's abit difficult to diagnose the problem.

Got any photos of your setup which may help me diagnose the problem?

If your cargo blind is vibrating, it sounds like it's plenty loud already - unless it's flapping around like mad and not much bass frequencies, in which case you may have the subs out of phase with each other (if you have two subs).

Re: Got bass?

Rich,

i had the amp wired up by autobarn at campbelltown and the negative was just screwed down to the back seat bracket.I thought it was dodgy because you could move the lug around but it sounded fine. But as soon as i put the anderson plug in the line the sub really struggled and went from booming enough to make make my lebanese friends ohhh ahh like smurfs,,to sounding worse than an old mans fart.So i by passed the plug and went straight from the battery to the amp and it cranked fine again. The connections on the plug were top notch so maybe it was the actual plug to plug connection.I bought it from crown fork lifts at smithfield and maybe i got one that was too big??
So i was stuck with having to unplug the wires at the amp every time i had to remove the subs and somewhere in the process have zapped the amp and blown the out puts,,,still waiting for the parts to come in but should have it back this week.
Would love to hear yours with the tweeters in.Am looking to upgrade the speakers in the doors,,do you know what size they are and if the basic size wouyld foul the windows?
10/10 on the tweeter install guide. Well done.

Re: Got bass?

What beach is images 3228 & 3125 taken at? One looks like Boat Harbour @ Kurnell, but not sure of the other one?!

We'll have to see if we can arrange a time to meet up and you can have alisten to mine, and I can have a look at your Anderson plugs and see why they're causing you problems...
The negative connection sounds bad to begin with - see if you can change the loose screw for a nut & bolt... Shouldn't be too difficult to do it yourself (just don't go drilling any new holes into the floor - the petrol tank is under the back seats!)

As for factory speaker replacement - I have no idea, but I think one of the other members @ the yahoogroup had some photos of the door trims removed in one of their photo albums... http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/australian_x-trail/lst?.dir=/Front+Door+Trim+Removal&.src=gr&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/australian_x-trail/lst%3f%26.dir=/%26.src=gr%26.view=t

Re: Got bass?

Thanks for the links guys, good stuff.

Rich,

You were right about boat harbour. The other shot of the little hill (it's steeper in real life honest) is at a place called tuckerman park. You go left at the bottom of Bulli pass and it's just past the patrolled beach at Austinmeer.Great spot for the family, you can park on the grass and then walk on the beach or let the dogs run amok.
Let me know if your heading there as you have to keep an eye out for the little track off the road and i can give you directions to find it.Would be a good place for an x-trail meet????
