4X4 AUSTRALIA magazine - Used X-Trail Review
December 2004 issue, P100-106 is a review for those considering purchasing a used X-Trail...
Brief summary:
Generally an excellent review reminding us that our beloved X-Trails are the definite pick-of-the-bunch compared to other soft-roaders in terms of effectiveness of it's 4WD system, amount of interior room, performance on & offroad, fuel economy, and they give some of the mid-sized 4WD's a run for their money. There are very few problems with them, and it would be hard to find one that's clocked over 100,000k's, even the ones that have been used as fleet vehicles.
Try to avoid those that have had a hard life, which would be obvious from a quick inspection for dents etc on the undercarriage, or not serviced regularly...
It also mentions that there's not much aftermarket support for them, but that is mainly because the demand isn't there. I know for a fact that there is a touring pack available that has water tank, fridge, roof-mounted tent, and extra fuel capacity, so I don't know how they managed to forget that. They say most would only have "nudge-bar & spotties" (hey, even I fall into that category - if I could get a relatively cheap snorkel, I would've got it by now ).

Re: 4X4 AUSTRALIA magazine - Used X-Trail Review
The spare is probably someothing most people usually forget about, but as I took mine out on my very first offroad track, I know how susceptible tyres are to damage, even when you're being careful... (fortunately we managed to plug the hole, and didn't need the spare after all, but I'd already removed it ).
The big drawer that fills the entire bottom half of the boot would make it impossible to remove the spare wheel, unless they've factored it into the design of the drawer. No one would want to remove the entire contents of the drawer and the drawer itself (as you said, it would probably be very heavy) to get to the spare! You think they would've made some rear-mounted wheel carrier as part of the package
In the review, they suggested that the engine is bulletproof, yet we've heard otherwise (mostly o/s models, though) and no-one else I've spoken to has agreed about the vulnerability of the tow bar wiring plug - even Nissan Service said they hadn't had any back for repairs (but that's only one workshop), so I could assume yours is a fairly isolated incident (and would depend on how hard you take it offroad). The first thing I disagreed with in the article was the comment in one of the photos about how durable the interior is, and mine already had scratches after a few months of ownership from new, and everyone else also seems to think the interior isn't durable enough... But while they missed a few things we all know about, they still covered it pretty well.

Re: 4X4 AUSTRALIA magazine - Used X-Trail Review
Re the towbar connection, it comes mounted below the bar, so it is the first to go if you scrape at the back. If you get one fitted I recommend putting at the top. Repairing is easy, remove and screw in replacement. Mine went early in the piece
SEE THE PIC
Had no problems after that as it was taped up and sat above the bar (never used it) until I fixed it up for sale.
Agree about the durability of the interior, I had some wear and tear, but I think that is to be expected noting the material used. Apart from that I thought the article was pretty good, only commented about the exhaust because it is pretty obvious. At the end of the day I only got rid of mine because I can only afford two cars, and I have to much invested in the GQ. (although it is sitting far too idle these days!!)
Rich- enjoy misty
