Any anglers out there?

Last weekend my father-in-law and I went on a fishing tour day trip on Botany Bay...

I'd attach a photo but I haven't had the chance to upload it to the thubnail webspace yet. I've attached the URL in case anyone's curious to see my first catch of a legal-size fish. Image is around 350k in size. http://ww2.datazap.net/ftp/basshead/firstfish.jpg

I lost count of the fish I caught on the day. I'm sure I landed at least 2 taylor and 2 leatherjackets. Between our group of 5 we each took home 3 taylor and a leatherjacket.

I found the lure fishing most effective (& fun!) and would probably try this method (once I get a lure!) as well as bait fishing.

We departed Taren Point bridge around 6:15am and got back about 1pm. Most of our taylor were caught by trolling lures from 3 lines along the container wall (I think that's where we were?! See background of photo above) - 15-20 taylor in about 8 passes in about 30 to 40 minutes. We also tried baiting them earlier and only managed a few before not getting any bites after about half an hour so after deciding to try the lures. Leatherjackets were caught right next to one of the markers not far from the container wharf... More difficult to catch than taylor as you can't stop reeling them in; if you do, then they get away.

My father-in-law bought a 2nd-hand aluminium tinny with small motor for under $800 during the week, and I picked up some gear today @ the fishing show @ homebush - a Silstar Stinger rod with Pioneer BF-5000 reel (for $60), 300m of line ($20) and a $10 box of assorted hooks, swivels and sinkers to get me going. I'm new to fishing (in case you hadn't realised) so I don't mind if you tell me if I got ripped-off with my purchase of the rod & reel! I wanted something a little better than the $20 kmart/bigw specials, but didn't want to fork out hundreds for something I might only use a few times a year...

Now I've just got to find the time to go out and use my gear - I probably should cook and eat my first lot of fish first, though! emoticon

Hi Rich

I have a few thousand dollars worth of fishing gear (plus my boat) and I am lucky to go fishing 4 times a year. Stick with your less expensive gear while you are still new to the scene.

The $60 is a good place to start for a rod & reel combo and I always find AMart All-Sports have a good range of less expensive gear.
