Re: 4WD parking fees doubled

Hey guys i was reading about this yday in the sydney morning herald. Not fair on soft-roaders at all. I was reading somewhere that xtrails have good emission standards, not to mention having the most technologically advanced engine in this class.

But in the councils defence, the larger 4wds (landcruisers, patrols, prados, ML's) are getting pretty crowded in sydney streets, esp around the inner west and northshore where the streets can barely fit a VW polo. If ur within a certain range of the city i dont think u need a large fwd, esp when they are basically used as shopping trolleys/children movers and not much else...

I dont really see any problem using a 4wd as a shopping trolley or kid mover. I mean if you want a decent sized people mover its either a Honda Odyssey or kia carnival or a 4wd.

If you buy a car, you can use it anyway you like.

Or a Mazda MPV, Chrysler Voyager, Toyota Tarago... etc etc lol.

I was just giving my opinion on this matter, and i still stick to my belief that large 4wds in inner city sydney aren't practical. Thats just what i think, i personally wouldnt buy one if i could fit my 3 kids or the shopping in a wagon or ppl mover (which in the long run are less expensive that owning a large 4wd)

It's always good to go against the grain once in a while or else the forums would be a boring boring place emoticon

Re: 4WD parking fees doubled

If I had the choice I would buy a HUM-V, will fit all of my kids, the wife and mother in law, untouchable on the road (and off road), great for shopping and more importantly would give a headache to the council ranger as to how and what to classify this parked tank on the street LOL emoticon

The only problem is, I wont be able to find that many chrome and shiny things to attach to this type of vehicle emoticon

North Sydney Councils decision is part of their strategy towards "protecting the integrity of the natural, urban and social environments and works towards ensuring the principles of sustainable development"

The fact that 4WDs are singled out in this decision by the media is due to the misinformation campaign run by some groups

The 4WD critics figures and argument about the growth of 4WDs is fuelled because, like is or not , you drive a 4WD. They make no difference between soft roaders and others. A good example of this can be found in the ACA's dismissal of a complaint against a Today Tonight Story (see Issue 1)
ACA Breach Investigation

Although there was a growth in large 4WDs due to the introduction of pajeros and the like in the 90s, the real explosion has occurred by the boom in compact, soft, small 4wds (xtrails ect). How many of the thousands of xtrails, crvs, foresters and the like are being bought by first timers trading in their 2wd sedan.

Albeit there has also been a smaller growth by the baby boomers buying something to tow their caravan around. (which can also be attributed by a standardisation of towing vehicle requirements a couple of years ago.)

As for overcrowding, well the only way to reduce overcrowding is to adopt the European model of moving to cars like the Smart Car. In fact there is very little difference in size (footprint) of two of the most popular 4wds

Dimensions (length and width)
Prado 4730 -1730
Xtrail 4510 -1765

Throw in the figures of Falcons and station Wagons and "at the end of the day" none are really that different

So in reality if you had a street and lined both sides with either vehicle, you "might" just fit in one more xtrail length wise, but you would have at least extra 35mm either side for passing traffic if they were all Prados

Fuel consumption. Yep the xtrail isn't too bad (xtrail 9.4- 9.8) but really hardly a difference compared to patrol diesel 10.7-10-9 or Prado 11.4
Green Vehicle Guide

So, some would say that softroaders are very much the problem, which is really a growing change in lifestyle at odds with our population expansion.

But I wont - I just wanted to have some fun with your comments. Please don't start picking on me emoticon
