engine pinging?

Ok, this one is aimed more at the technically-minded X-Trail owners...

I know what pinging is and sounds like, and I have noticed that my X-Trail sounds very mich like it's pinging - all the time! For those that don't know, it's sort-of a rattling noise from inside the engine caused by a number of reasons... Usually more noticeable under hard(er) acceleration at low(er) engine revs...

I have noticed it alot of the time (more noticeable when you're driving alongside one of those large concrete barriers/walls) and I think I've even heard it when it's idling while I shut the garage door... This leads me to believe that it's normal, and probably not pinging at all.

Does everyone else's sound like this?

I know if my old SSS sounded like that, I'd be extremely worried!

I haven't yet put a tank of premium in it to see if that makes any difference (made a big difference in my SSS)...

Re: engine pinging?

Hi Rich,

I have listended to my engine and I can't hear any rattling noises coming out of it.

I'm not very technical minded when it comes to cars, but I'm sure I can spot any rattling noises coming out of any spot in the car and this is driving my wife crazy some times emoticon

Remember when I told you about the noise coming out of the air con fan? you couldn't hear it, but I still can and it's driving me nuts emoticon

Are you sure you haven't got a loose barcket or something inside the engine compartment?

It's done it since I got it, so I doubt anything would be loose on a new car...

It's probably normal anyway emoticon

Re: engine pinging?

Hi Richi,

Tonight after we returned from the Watagans drive, I was dusting-off the engine compartment and then turned on the engine and I heard the same rattling noise you're talking about coming from inside of the engine, as if it's coming from under one of spark plugs.

If this is the same pinging you're talking about, it's new and I never heard it that clear before. The car was on idle and it was very clear with the bonnet open.

Didn't you recently get a re-program of the ECU at a Nissan dealership? Might be worth taking it back to them and asking them about it...

How many k's has yours done?

36K. Yeah, I might it take it back if I have time, otherwise I probably leave it until I do the 40K service, as it doesn't seem to be affecting anything else in terms of performance and power.

Re: engine pinging?

Pinging can be a couple of things.

While the car is driving, especially under hard accelaration or low revs, pinging can be caused by the crappy fuel they sell us which is too low in octane which causes the car's ECU to retard the timing slightly, that is to try to hold off the "spark" cycle of combustion so that the spark plug is firing too early before all the fuel/air ratio is properly mixed. This causes pinging. You'll hear it alot worse on older leaded cars because they've taken the lead out. Funny that, they don't want lead in fuel because they say it can cause slow learning in children yet unleaded fuel produces an aromatic gas (that horrible egg smell when cold starting) that is an a known carsongenic cancer causer. I'd much rather my daughters be a little slow at learning than be dead of cancer at the age of 10 years old.....

The other reason you may hear pinging or ticking, around the spark plugs etc when stopped is often the thin metals that the new car exhaust sytems and manifolds are made of tend to expand and contract alot more so the pinging sound you can hear is often the metal popping back into shape or position. You hear that on almost every new car on the market, especially when they're still fairly new, like in the case of Mr Bassheads having only travelled 36,000 kilometres.

If you want to stop the pinging sound wghile driving and prolong the life of your motor, try an octane booster available through Repco or AutoOne etc, they're about $15 per 500ml bottle. You don't need to use the whole bottle like they tell you (obviously they can sell more than) but maybe 1/3 to 1/2 a bottle every second or third fill up. Alternatively put a full bottle in if you plan on doing a long trip up the coast or somewhere, that way it has a good chance at running right through your full fuel system.

Hope it helps, all the best.

Re: engine pinging?

Sorry for the bad typo, I meant to say that the ECU retards the timing of the "spark" cycle so IT DOESN'T FIRE TOO EARLY

So as the piston comes up on the combustion stroke, the ECU is sort of saying to the spark plug " ready........ready.......ready" and then at the crucial moment when the piston just starts to go back down (normally the spark would fire just as the piston hit's the top of the chamber) the spark fires and shoves the already downward moving piston to the bottom. That way the sparks not prematurely firing too early.

Crickey's that last line sounds a bit like my grandfathers problem.......my grandma's always teasing him about his prematurely firing spark plug......lol

Re: engine pinging?

Thanks for the tip nissanxtrail and I would surely give this Octane Booster a go at next re-fill.

It seems like your grandpa can use some of the stuff too to fix his problem emoticon

By the way, you can always go back to edit the post and change what you typed in it without posting another reply. Just use the "edit" button on the left side under your username.

It is also a good opportunity for you to tell us a bit about yourself, just simple things, your car (I bet it's not the xtrail, although your username might suggest otherwise) emoticon where abouts are you from and any simple things you want us to know.

To do this just use the intro. section

http://com1.runboard.com/baustralianxtrail.fintroductions.t3

Thanks mate.

Re: engine pinging?

Bass & Jalal: Have the dealer definitely look into it. If our cars ping beacuse of engine detonation under load you guys will have probably noticed a reduction in power, and hesitation during aceleration. If this noise is not associated with these characteristics you may have a faulty secondary catalic converter on you exhaust manifold.

The ECU reflash is supposed to help cure this on the QR25DE. It basically tells your engine not to dump so much gas into the combustion chambers (a leaner map) when the ECU changes to it's WOT settings. By dumping to much gas, it goes unburnt to the cat, making the porcelain in the interior deteriorate. This particles eventually find their way back to the engine block making it seize.

This problem is really common on QR25DE engines. Another possibility may be (just like nissanxtrail said) that the exhaust manifold is expanding due to heat soak, making the ceramic in the interior *ping*.
