why, do you have evidence that it is required. What's different from a pajero to 12 seat mini bus. If someone drives a 2wd only prado is that included emoticon

Yep, all "big" vehicles. I wouldnt mind having special training if the government enforced it.

and bull bars really have no place in the city.

How would that be determined, would it have to be removed at the city limits, can it be done, where would it be placed. Arent bullbars required to undergo ADR compliance already.
Is it easy to remove your nudge bar. Because that falls in the same category

Nudge bars/bull bars are a menace to pedestrians. Unless you have a legitimate reason to have one (asthetics not being one of them), they should be outlawed**. Legit reasons could be rural, or member of a 4wd club. That would wipe out 50% of them just on that.

BTW when they talk about 4WDs they mean you. The women on ACA last night that said how nervous she was driving her 4WD around in the city was driving a CRV.
So you can see the research that went into that story.

Trust me, I feel very uneasy driving in areas where kids are around in the xtrail. (eg caravan parks). Especially reversing. Hense why I've been looking into aids.

The little girl was killed by a driver of a vehicle. Apart from harold and the rests poor form using her death as a promotion, its a beat up. And its not that the car was a 4wd, it the fact that shool drop off and pick areas are uncontrolled and unable to meet the changing environment where more children are driven to school because parents dont like them going alone.
So I say the coroneor should go forr it and do the right investigations and come up with the right solutions. The anti 4wd garbage is unrelated. The same thing happens - 4 times already this year- with other cars as well

Its a bit each way. Bad school policy. Bad driving. Bad car for the job. Its a beat up, but I'm sure a lot of parents are quite concerned about this at schools all over the country. A death just unleashes this built up concern.

Note: ** Maybe outlawed is too strong. Perhaps if you choose to have one and you cause a pedestrian death and the bull bar is the primary cause of death, then you get a manditory jail term. emoticon
Lets not forget what bull-bars are designed to do: Take the full impact of a kangaroo or wild animal to avoid damaging the car. No crumple zones to reduce injury for you Mr Roo.

These are of course just my personal argumentive views, not the views of "Australian Xtrail".

Re: special licence for 4wd drivers

Sounds like a lot of this is being taken out of context. I don’t do much driving around schools, but I’d say a big factor would have to be the incompetence of the driver. Some people just shouldn’t have a license period. This combined with a non-safe level of vehicle speed is just an accident waiting to happen, not just around schools.

One solution is to force practical driving tests when one renews their open license every 5 years. Most people would fail the test, but would make for a much safer road.

A drivers license should be a privilege not a right.

For those with larger vehicles, I’d have to agree that reversing aids is advisable.

As for bull-bars, why should these be condoned for city driving? If it is because a child’s life could be saved, perhaps I guess so, but most people have them to offer a level of protection to the vehicle.

My two bobs worth

Cheers

Re: special licence for 4wd drivers

The edition of the story I watched listed three other groups of vehciles which I think were poor for visibility - the camry was one of them emoticon

For those that haven't fully realised, (but like Peter already mentioned) - this week it's "bag 4WD owners" - last week (or month) it was truckies speeding (kilometres per hour, and drugs emoticon ) - next week (or month) it'll be car hoons and/or motorbike riders.

And so the cycle continues... All for ratings. You know it's just for ratings when the same topics continue to pop up in the media over and over again, and still nothing has been done to solve the so-called problems.

No offence to the parent(s) of the young school girl, but for them (or any parents) to say that they expect an immediate action to solve the respective problems, so no other child dies the same way, is very unrealistic. Accidents happen. It's a fact of life. And there is only so much that can be done to prevent accidents without confining everybody to their homes!

I think that is being a little dismissive

Its more of a process of driver education. This woman who killed the child has sold the 4wd and drives a sedan because she didnt realise the added danger of a 4wd in those situations. The key would be to get this information to her (and like her) before she gets a 4wd.
If you drive a 4wd, know the consequences. You are more likely to kill someone else even though the chances are still small, and the usual ramifications of that are life changing and long reaching. (like marriage breakdown for this woman).

Its another cost/benefit/risk scenario into the equation that some people overlook.
It doesnt apply to most here as we have legit reasons for owning a 4wd.

Re: special licence for 4wd drivers

If we're talking about large vehicles with poor rearward visibility that are used to pick the children up from school, what about the likes of the Chrysler Voyager/ Kia Carnival etc, vehicles specifically designed for the purpose of carrying hoards of kids. I believe it's a total MEDIA beatup that will never be inplemented by government due to the political backlash & the anomonallies(too hard). As mentioned previously it's more than likely for MEDIA gains than the protection of innocent lives!!
