(Edit: link fix) nondisclosed_email@example.com (basshead)Fri, 22 Jul 2005 16:08:47 +0000 Re: Subwoofer Ideashttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877646,from=rss#post877646https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877646,from=rss#post877646Jalal, that pretty much answers all my questions... I was surprised to learn that he'd built the sub box to fit neatly over the "jack & handle" cover - good idea (even if you do need to move the box over to get the jack out - at least you don't need to take the endire sub box out of the boot to get the spare out). I don't think I'd be able to make the box for a 12-inch sub to do the same trick, as the 12-inch sub would most likely need to be mounted on an angle (sloping side of the box) to fit under the cargo blind. I still think making a long skinny box to sit hard up against the back of the back seat would be better suited for my needs. I should scan all my drawings/plans and upload them here so others can see the ideas I've come up with nondisclosed_email@example.com (basshead)Thu, 19 May 2005 21:59:47 +0000 Re: Subwoofer Ideashttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877645,from=rss#post877645https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877645,from=rss#post877645Rich, Here is the reply I got from the xtrailer that has the above set-up: quote: My sub is a "Concept" and it is 10" (that was the biggest that would fit since the enclosure volume was also to be considered) and I only have one; I found it would be more than plenty unless you want to blow out your own windows HA!. I had to make my own enclosure to fit that little recess in the back. So it is kind of a funny shape but it works. I have it sitting on rubber feet which brings the top of the enclosure just under the tonneau cover bar and that's how it stays in place. It stays firmly in place, never had any problems; mind you I don't get much side to side tilts since I am never off road more than 5 minutes. The way it is made I have just enough clearance to remove the spare wheel hard cover. But of course I have to move the sub to get to the jack & tools. My amp is a kenwood KAC-7201, again I used little rubber pads between the amp and the back seat. The screws are probably 1" long and they actually grab into the thin metal frame of the seat. If you remove the back hard covering you should be able to see the frame to locate the screws. And the seat padding is very thick there is no problem with the rear passenger getting stabbed in the back by that little screw (as long as you use minimal length) Hope this helps nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Thu, 19 May 2005 21:18:47 +0000 Re: Subwoofer Ideashttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877644,from=rss#post877644https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877644,from=rss#post877644quote:jalalski wrote: I have just come across this subwoofer set-up which looks perfect and out of the way of everything else in the back. This was one of the several plans I had for building a box - only my box plans were considerably larger due to being ported boxes. If I was to trade-off output for size then I think that box would definitely have to be the one to build. One question - How is it secured in place? It would topple over during the first right-hand-turn! I like the amplifier location (if your passengers don't mind screws sticking into their back!) but it is also susceptible to damage from flying objects in the boot. I wanted to mount the amplifier on the box so I could remove the amp and subwoofer all in one go - having them separate like that would mean twice as much time needed to remove (and replace) them from the car. That box design doesn't allow for mounting of the amplifier onto the box unless the box is made wider so the amp can sit on top or on the opposite side to the sub. Where did you find that photo, Jalal? I have a feeling it's only a 10-inch sub, which would explain why it fits so easily under the cargo blind... nondisclosed_email@example.com (basshead)Thu, 19 May 2005 17:26:37 +0000 Re: Subwoofer Ideashttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877643,from=rss#post877643https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877643,from=rss#post877643Rich and all, I have just come across this subwoofer set-up which looks perfect and out of the way of everything else in the back. Maybe you can try constructing the same type of box for your sub and you can even have one at each side for even more Bass P.S. That thing on the back seat is the Amp.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Thu, 19 May 2005 13:14:31 +0000 Re: Subwoofer Ideashttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877642,from=rss#post877642https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877642,from=rss#post877642Hi Cantum and welcome to the forums... Legweak already suggested my next recommended option - if you don't minf foregoing the spare wheel. Even though the spare is mounted so the dish is facing upwards, there is not air space for a box for one 12inch let alone two... I take it you've read the thread Jalal posted the link to, and seen all the photos. I explored the possibility of mounting it in the tailgate but it would need to be built out considerably to allow for the airspace required for the box (two subs again would be even bigger) and then there was the problem of the factory gas shocks most likely not being able to hold the weight of the box and sub when the tailgate is open... Nothing has changed since then, except that the box is out of the car 80% of the time because Clare says it takes up too much space (for the shopping). I've already got plans to build a wedge shaped box from when I was deciding which shape to build initially. The new box will fit just under the cargo blind, and sit hard up against the back of the rear seats. At this stage I don't know how it will go as far as weight distribution/centre-of-gravity is concerned, to prevent the box tipping over backwards under moderate to hard acceleration. If it fails, I'll probably put some brackets on the back of the box to keep it stable rather than build yet another box The wedge style should give me back about half the boot floor space I've lost from the existing box. I might also ditch the idea to make it a ported box (as I've always built) - again to save on size. The only problem now is just finding the time to build it! nondisclosed_email@example.com (basshead)Sun, 08 May 2005 09:11:14 +0000 Re: Subwoofer Ideashttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877641,from=rss#post877641https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p877641,from=rss#post877641I'm not an expert in any way, but couldn't you mount a sub inside the spare wheel somehow? That looks like a nice bit of space, and if you made a grill of some sort to go over it, it won't impact on the use of the boot. I'm attempting to mount a pair of boxed Pioneer IMPP 12" subs in the X. Problem is, because of the wide-open nature of the back of the truck, I need them to be semi-portable/removable (Removable within 5 minutes time- If I leave them over-night, someone will follow the boom home and likely steal them). This means that the amp/sub have to be combined or easily parted. I've read the previous post on the topic, and was just wondering if anyone's come up with a different set of ideas, or has evolved their system. I've done subwoofer installs before, but always in Sport Compact trunks where you can build the subs into the trunk. This is something quite new to me. Appreciate any help you can give me.
