Re: AT tyres

Rich,

I have always planned on going to the P225/70/15's to get an easy 6 - 8mm extra ground clearance over the 215/70's. I looked at the 215/75's but they are all over the 15mm allowable increase in diameter. They would probably give a firmer / harsher ride that the 225/70's anyway. Just be aware that your speedo will be incorrect in it's reading with the bigger tyres.

Matt,

I don't have any experience with the 16" Bridgestones, early model ST's came with 15" rims.

Re: AT tyres

I dont know what anyone else has been told but I think I posted this earlier in the thread that the 225/70 are too wide for the standard 15" rim when tyre pressure dropped for sand potential to roll off.

Re: AT tyres

Oopps maybe I got my tyre dimensions wrong there... the ones I've been researching are 215/75R15. I was led to believe (through the early stages of my research) that this size would be more accurate than the standard 215/70R15 (mine were out from brand new - I'd click over the next kilometre on those odometer check signs about 50m further and further in front of each approaching sign.

I was also led to believe that the wider 225 tyres would srcub the inside walls (of the wheel arch/engine bay) at full lock, thus Shane's comment that they are too wide is correct in this way. The tyre manufacturer may also recommend not fitting them on such a narrow rim...

I'll start a new thread with my review as it stands, and update it in the near future with photos, and later with further research (which may be months away).

Re: AT tyres

The tyre place gave the ok for the 215/75 and would fit the 225 but he advised me not too. I dont think they would rub.

Re: AT tyres

Shane

I have alloys on my ST, and I have been trying to find out if they are any wider than the standard 15" rims. In any case, I am fairly relaxed when beach driving and I have never and can't imagine I ever would do any high speed direction changing that may pop the bead on the rim. The Cooper HT 225/70 has an approved rim width of 6 - 7 inches, and the 225/70 Toyo OPAT is 6 - 7.5 inches. Where can I see on the rims what the rim width is? There are no markings visible on the outside of the rim.

Re: AT tyres

Strange that there are no markings, could be on the inside, otherwise just check with Tyre place.

I know what you mean about rolling bead off, it just depends how low of a pressure running.

When car in for recent 10k service, nissan advised me too go as low as 12lb and check after 1/2 hour.

Shane

I am going to contact Toyo today to see if I can get the specs on the Tranpath A14 to compare to the OPAT. The Toyo website has good tyre spec info on it (but nothing I can see on the A14).

It's interesting that the tyre shop would fit the 215/75 because they should know that it is over the 15mm allowable increase in diameter from standard 215/70.

Re: AT tyres

Hi Guys
Another for the mix.
Continental Comtitrac suv's rated 80/20 on/off road
Read about them in an Overlander article. They had them on one of their vehicles.I kept the name but can't find the article again. From memory got a good report.

Re: AT tyres

Hi Darryl

I followed that report also, but I have read in a few other places that they get very low mileage because of a soft compound. Who do you believe?

Has anyone ever had a look at www.tirerack.com It's an American site but a few of the tyres are avialable here, and they get a lot of feedback from owners who are using the tyres. Once again, buyer "A" thinks a certain tyre is great, and buyer "B" reckons it's the worst tyre he has ever used. Everyone has an opinion.

Re: AT tyres

Guys,

Reading all of the posts about the different tyre options, I got totally lost as to what are my best options when time comes for my tyre replacements.

I think I'll be changing my tyres to a tank chain instead. More durable, less maintenance and good for off-road adventures emoticon Just kidding.

It will be good if we can summarise all of the available options in one post/thread/document and split the options between the 15" and 16".
