X-Trail Washing Tips

Ok this may sound like a bit of a lame subject, but I just spent over an hour washing it (damn water restrictions), and even then, it wasn't a very good job (too much dried mud from Nowra!).

I can guess that Jalal will be the first to reply to this thread as he loves keeping his X-Trail spotless.

I'm not too keen to spend mega-$$$ paying someone else to wash it, and the only other time I've washed it was @ one of those CarLover's places ($8 all-up).

There's still alot of caked mud on the underside of the car and around the insides of the wheel arches... The high-pressure cleaner @ CarLover's is easier to use than trying to reach underneath with a sponge in your hand emoticon

My Pulsar was much easier and quicker to clean emoticon

By the way, I found a nasty stone chip in the middle of the bonnet... Probably happened during one of the trips to Oberon rather than the Nowra Trek last Sunday.

Re: X-Trail Washing Tips

The only time I've had the 'trail washed, was when a local kid offered to do it for $5 a few months ago. (I had to do the roof as he couldnt reach).

I must get him around again, as its caked with mud after the nowra trek too.

Jalal, I'd love to hear how you go fixing the light scratches you were talking about with Peter in the other thread.
I've got a few to take out myself.

Re: X-Trail Washing Tips

Hi Guys, it's me again emoticon

Well, I guess Geoff beat me to being the 1st one to reply to this thread, so that is taken care off emoticon

Before I start, I just wanted to ask you guys if you're having any trouble logging in to Runborad and how long does it usually takes before you're logged-in? On a number of occasions now I just sit there and watch the bar crawling after I put my username and password and nothing happens.

Anyway, back to my "favourite" subject "A spotless X-Trail" emoticon with the water restrictions, I have been taking mine to Crystal Car Wash at Blakehurst every 2 months and it's costing me $29 a pop. I wouldn't have done it if I couldn't claim it on tax.

On the night we got back from Nowra, I just couldn't go to sleep without washing the mud off the car fearing exactly that "dried mud" and I thought that the car wash place would charge me extra for taking it off for me the next day, so I admit that I've done the sneaky and hosed it off (on tope of the grass I should say) so I was doing 2 things at once, watering my grass and getting the mud off. emoticon

On the subject of the fine scratches, I found some sort of cream bottle that Ming (the company that did the paint protection for me at the dealership) gave to me to remove these fine scratches and keep the car in "showroom condition as they claim" I must admit that it's done the job perfectly and removed all of these fine scratches. The Ming Car tint guys have an office here in Sutherland, right next to the Nissan dealership, so if I ever run-out of this stuff (which I presume will be pretty soon with they way I'm going emoticon ) I can always get it from there.

Waterless Car Wash

Hi Guys,

Just came across THIS company that offers waterless car wash and they come to your place to do it emoticon

Anyone used this method or these guys before?

I find it curious how can they get that dirt and mud off a car without scratching it but apparently it can be done.

I think I'll give them a go one day, just to prove myself wrong emoticon

I found a business very close to home (Cairns actually) that offers a completely different way to washing your car. With no Tap water, you'll never put tap water on your car again after you've read how bad tap water really is, emoticon

The "Tyre Dye" is also another good product which actually soaks into the rubber compared to conventional tyre conditioners than only last a few days.

I've used both the Spray & Wipe and Tyre Dye and both products are excellent.

Anyway check it out for yourselves.

I've seen those "waterless" car wash things demonstrated before, and from what they tell me, it's virtually impossible to use them on a very dirty 4WD as there's just too much dirt to remove.

Also re: the tap water - About 6 months ago I installed a 1000L rainwater tank and while it was virtually empty for a few months, now it's full and I've been meaning to borrow my father-in-law's gurney so I can give the X-Trail a good (and legal, due to water restrictions) wash!

While I haven't used any of these products yet (but read a lot about them) you're correct Rich. These products are more suited to the type of cars that spend their life parked in a garage and only get a little bit of dust on them, which this products (and many others that are similar) will surely remove. It not meant to remove baked mud of course LOL

Under Sydney's current water restrictions, it would be perfectly legal for you to connect up a Karcher washer (K499 @ RRP around $500, but there are other brands worth looking at) to your 1000 l water tank. Or you could rig up a (say) 20 or 40l tub which you can fill from the mains, and connect via a tap+hose to the Karcher. That's what Bunnings @ Bankstown Airport had rigged up to demo the washer, and the water board advised me its okay.
Tub plus tap might cost you $30.00.

Smaller Karcher's like the K199 are also useful, but the shorter hose length is fairly restrictive and it's worth the higher pressure of the more expensive units.

With either, you will still need to use a brush+soap first if you want to minimize water use and time - just like at the local CarLover's type washers.

With just buckets and brush, it's pretty easy to go through 36 to 40 l (4 or 5 buckets). Mains hose of course takes more - about 12 litre/minute x 5 minutes = 60 litres. But with the Karcher's you can get it done with 15 to 20 l per car. That's why in Vic using Karcher's is okay - it's more water efficient than buckets.

At Sydney Water, they wouldn't look at Karcher's evidence.

I've got one of the 8 ltr garden sprayer bottles which hold about the same as a bucket but gives a pressurised spray.

Use the bucket for the suds and then spray off the soap with the sprayer.

Only need about 2 of these bottles to finish off the Exy completely.

Re: X-Trail Washing Tips

Melbourne is now on Stage 3 - for vehicles you can use tap water from a bucket only on windows, lights and "corrosive material". Probably it will soon be considered anti-social to have a clean vehicle (even though you're allowed to use a commercial car wash or tank, will we have to put a sign in the window to explain ourselves like people with green gardens have a sign out the front to say "tank water only"?)
Might be easier to leave the car dirty for now - they say the drought is highly likely to break in March.
