Thanks Pete.

Here we go again! I wonder how long would it take nissan to put it up on their web site?

Doesn't say what year model it affects though.

Lets keep an eye out for this.

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

Just reading the details on the link Peter provided sounds very much like the problems that happen when shrapnel from the catalytic converter break off and enter the engine cylinders...

I wonder what their "fix" is - a replacement convereter or complete removal of it (and replace it with a length of straight-through piping)?

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

I just checked a number of nissan sites worldwide (including Japan) and there is no information about this recall at all.

I'm calling nissan tomorrow.

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

To be fair I am pretty sure it would have been Nissan who advised Product Recalls, and its just the nissan site that hasnt been updated. Its only a couple of days old (Friday) Nissans primary reporting method to owners is to mail them and advise service centers.

Probably a good time for those with used xtrails to check they have filled in the little coupon and advised Nissan they are the new owners so they are always advised off recalls.

**Update**Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

Hi Guys,

I have called Nissan Head-Office/Melbourne and was instructed to leave a number for the technical department to call back and so I did.

I then called the Nissan Regional Office in Parramatta and they have confirmed the recall and said it was a directive from Nissan Head-Office and letter will be sent-out directly to the affected owners, the lady then said she will put in touch with head-office, but I got the same message as above (leave a number and we'll call you back).

Spoke to the service mgr at Nissan Rockdale who was unaware of the latest re-call and kept mentioning the last one for the sensors. He said they have received nothing from nissan head-office about this recall. He did ask me though to email him the information as shown on the Australian Product Recall web site and so I did.

Waiting for further information from one of the above parties.

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

Weird, that Recall was performed on my country a Year Ago. My engine had to be replaced on december 2003, because it had excessive oil consumption. More info on this recall can be found on nissanusa.com. Select "2002 Sentra V-spec(qr25)".

Nissan replaces the ecu, but not the cat converter(the used, abused one by the old ecu), wich is NOT good as it still happends with the old cat converter, as oil consumption starts gradually to increase. After 12000kms on the new engine/cat convertor, cat convertor started to disintegrate again(out of warranty), no apparent oil consumption.

Fix?: 1. Use a screwdriver to extract the honeycomb of the cat convertor(the x-trail uses 2 cat convertors, so it doesnt matters if you remove 1, I removed botch emoticon ). 2. Replace the exhaust manifold with a racing one that fits the NISSAN SENTRA SE-R overseas.

Also, there is another known issue with QR25DE'S(not related to cat convertor, but that happends a lot). It's that the screws of the butterfly located in the manifold(the ones that open the secondary runners) tend to get loose and get inside of the combustion chambers, breaking your sparkplug and massively increasing oil consumption(also dropping compression/power). Sometimes nissan will replace the engine, but most of the time they will just replace the screw....

fix?

1. Apply some kind of loctite(thread locker) to the screw.

My screws were very loose when I checked them so I used some white stuff for pvc that is rated to 260C.

How to check if your cat convertor is broken? monitor oil cons. if you consume more than 1.5 litres of oil between changes it's likely that your cat is broken, happens quite a lot on hard driven vehicles(and towingemoticon).

How to check if the butterfly screws are gone?, you see after 5000rpm the secondary runners on the manifold open(wich decreases the distance that air has to travel to the cylinder head) and the engine "tone" changes, something like Vtec from honda. The best way to check if the tone changes is doing it witch your air filter housing opened.

Hope this helps..... emoticon

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage - a brisbane example

Ok here is our experience with the cat problem (Brisbane)

We purchased our vehicle in nov 04, it had 88000 on the clock and a month left of warranty. We were informed by the private seller that 12000 ks ago (dec 2003) the car wouldn’t turn on one morning. The car was towed to the closest Nissan dealer (gary crick) where it was found that the cat had blown up and sent shards of metal into the engine and in turn blown the engine. The “whole” engine was replaced (dec 03, I think) and driven until we bought it. The old engine was rushed to japan for analysis apparently. We were hesitant about buying this particular vehicle but we contacted Gary Crick Nissan and received exactly the same story as well as a letter confirming this and copies of the service history, we also had the car RACQ inspected.

Within 2 weeks of the purchase the car began to run rough at idle (almost stall with the air con on) and lack power all round. We took it to our nearest Nissan dealer (petrie Nissan) who said we had water in the plugs and to keep driving. A week later the problem had not gone and away and we booked in for a service and the latest ecu update. They said they had fixed the problem. We picked the car up there was no change. Dropped it off the next morning and they discovered the cat was full and we would need a replacement. The car had about 15 days left on warranty and we were told the part would take over 2 weeks to come form Melbourne and that it would then be out of warranty and we would have to pay $1200 or we should take on the extended warranty for $1000. We also got a lecture from some idiot about where a cat is and what it does and when he got it wrong he said he was from the hospitality industry. WTF?

My g/f hit the roof, told them to cut a cat out of an xtrail in their stock and use that or fit an after market part. The cat was then flown from Melbourne the next day and the repair took a further 3 days. She was told the problem was fixed, she picked up the car, same problem. She went for a drive with the service dept manager and he told her that there was no problem even when the car nearly stalled at every stop. She then asked him to take her for a drive in a new xtrail too see if that was the same, obviously he new it wouldn’t be and we left the car there. They had the car for another couple of days, replaced an engine mount and we picked it up 2 days before Christmas with the fault (so we thought) rectified. Total cost to Nissan $2400 and with 4 days of warranty left.
We made a written complaint to Nissan Australia regarding their service.

This week the problem has returned (along with others: air con fan selector) and we have also received a response from Nissan. The letter from Nissan stated that some guy would call us at a specific date and time. When we didn’t receive a phone call we rang Nissan at Petrie and asked for that particular person. He claims that no one from their group has been asked to call us.

The car has been on 2 dirt roads (less than 100ks) and some creek crossings less than ½ way up wheels (there were several 2 wheel drive vehicles) at Condamine

The car is booked in for Friday, it is now out of warranty. Please, please let me know if any of you have had any similar experiences overseas or otherwise or know anyone who has as this is now going to start costing us as well as the time without the car

Re: Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

I think you should check up on the warranty issue first. My understanding, and experiences (but not with an xtrail) are that: If you report a problem before the warranty expires, and they cant fix it, or there is a delay, it is still warranty work. Even if the warranty period expires in that time.
Also if its a recall, warranty period means nothing, I would also check about the replacement engine, dont all Genuinne replacement parts have a warranty.
Above all, dont give in. There has been a huge problem with the Series 1 3L Diesel patrol. They blow up - sometimes at 10k and some at 110k. This has been going on for a couple of years. In europe they did a recall and replaced the engines, in Australia they just increased oil capacity. But when they blow up nissan are replacing the motors at their cost. After much argument.
If you cant get the right answers, let me know and I will hunt down some info from Patrol Forums - there is a recommended contact

**2nd Update**Recall Catalytic Converter Breakage

OK Guys,

Just received a call from the service mgr at nissan Rockdale who stated that the recall information (which I sent him) looked genuine and serious enough! "You bet"

But listen to this:

None of the Australian dealers have yet been notified about this recall. I called 3 and none of them had the faintest idea what I was talking about and kept referring to the previous sensors recall.

What the hell is going on with Nissan Australia? emoticon

Are the dealers supposed to find this information from the affected customers before receiving anything from head office? How embarrassing is this to the dealers themselves, when they say "No Recall that we know of" then have to call back and say "Hmm, yes, there is a recall, but we don't know anything about it"

I was advised to sit tight and wait for a letter from Nissan, they couldn't even tell me if it affect every nissan or just a selected range.

Still waiting for a call back from Head Office.
