Re: Replacement Tyres

Thanks for that. Off-road is important, but it's still going to be highway a fair bit of the time, and I'm concerned about the noise. Will umm and ahh and change my mind several times before Saturday.

Either way, I'll need to update my spare to 16" too - still the 215/7015 for the ST. A local wrecker has a 16" Ti alloy for $220, or apparently a 16" steel rim off an '07 Exy (must be a T31 I imagine) for $150 (no tyre on either).

But I should be able to pick up a steelie from an Aussie sedan that would do the job, right? As long as it's a 16", 5x114.3, offset around 40 rim, that should be ok, shouldn't it?

I'm thinking a Mitso 380 base model or something? Would have to be a cheaper way to go...

Thanks
Brenton

Magna is the same stud pattern and im 99% sure offseat is the same aswell.

The bfgs arnt that noisy, not as bad as everyone makes out. The noise is the one thing that was turning me off them, but once they were on i couldnt understand what everyone was complaining about!

If the radio is on, even at a low volume, you cant hear them. I do lots of highway driving as well. Mine are 13000ks old and they are quieter, and they are showing no signs of wear.

Re: Replacement Tyres

I too will be joining the BFG club as soon as the factory tyres wear out. So far we have got 53,000km or so and can`t wait till they are low enough to replace. I will then start building the next bush basher modeled on Bretts and Matts, will have to come up with a new witty name for mine.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Go the BFG's!

Usually Brett is the first to recommend them, but he's had alot on his plate lately...

I'd also follow in Matt & Brett's footsteps - I've already thought of a witty name - if only I was allowed to get the lift kit!

Sorry, off-topic emoticon

Re: Replacement Tyres

Thanks everyone - good to know I'm still vulnerable to peer pressure! I rang them to change to BFGs, but there aren't any in the state and apparently they're about a month away. I can't wait that long as I currently don't have a spare.

The guy then recommended the Yokohama G012s as a better A/T than the Pirellis, so I'm lined up for those. Anyone tried these? They're around $225 in the 215/70 16s.

I spoke to him about the 15" spare situation, and he suggested we could also try a 215/75 on the 15" rim to give the same rolling diameter. Cheaper than the $220 Ti rim at the local wrecker...

Cheers
Brenton

toyos slide in wet & replacements

Posted by trailx - Moved from another thread
===========================================================

Ques 1.
My standard Toyos slide in the wet, a lot, but I also drive a lot in the rain. The car slips and slides but grabs before it goes very far. I should be used to it since it happens so often, but I still find it quite unnerving, and I did a big slide this afternoon to scare myself, coming up the Palmerston Highway after torrential rain.
Does this happen to anyone else?

Ques 2.
I need to replace these Toyos soon and thinking of either BFGs or Coopers, going by the comments in this section.
I'd love some suggestions please, since I'm not technically minded, and I don't know what I should be expecting from my originals or from other brands.
My original Toyos got 34391km,
second set 19782km (I forgot to rotate them whoops & ouch),
current set 25599 + maybe another 3000km if I'm lucky.
I've got 79600km on the clock as I write this.
I live in cloud, hardly ever leave home in dry weather, so I'm usually in Auto (exxy's a manual). Most of my driving is country bitumen in hilly country, some with single lane only where you drop the left wheels off at speed from time to time, or drive the whole car onto the shoulder, and like to trundle down the occasional "new" dirt road just for a look. Once a month I will be driving two hours very slow dirt forestry and station tracks which could turn to mud.
Would very much appreciate your advice.
Cheers
Julie

Hi Julie,

You sure do go through your tyres!

The reason they're no good in the wet is because they're so worn out! There is alot less tread groove for the water to escape into to allow a decent patch of tyre to contact the road.

Have you had many punctures or other tyre damage going onto the shoulders?

Based on the driving style you've given (like dropping off into the shoulder, and expected dirt/possibly mud in the future) the two tyre brands you've listed are probably the best choice. Of course myself and a couple of other members would recommend the BFG's, but I don't think any of us (three) have tried the coopers to be able to comment on them.

Both the BFG and Coopers should be very long-wearing compared to the factory Toyo's. Cooper guarantee 80,000 minimum, and from the wear I've got on my BFG's, I wouldn't be surprised if I get at least 80,000 on them; others have probably done more kilometres than I have in their BFG's, too.

The BFG's have very deep tread - 13mm from memory, meaing they're going to get the water out from under the tyre easier, and also last alot longer than a standard/factory tyre (I think they come with 9 or 11mm?)

Be aware that you'll get a slight increase in tyre noise, which is a trait of most all-terrain style tyres.

There's plenty of comments on the various A/T tyres available in a few other threads (if you don't mind lots of reading ).

The BFG's do wear very well. 14,000ks on mine and there is allmost no wear, <1mm!

But as Rich said, the Coopers are ment to be very good aswell. If you are doing a fair bit of dirt driving i would be picking either the Coopers or BFGs

Just take a look at what tyres most big 4WDs using, most will have either BFGs or Coopers

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi and thanks for your comments, it's appreciated.
First time the exxy slipped like that was at about 8,000km between Mareeba and Kuranda and they tyres definitely weren't worn then, or anything near it. Could just be the roads holding lots of water.
I can't believe I've got so little kms out of the tyres.
It does spend a lot of time in Auto, would that make a difference to the amount of wear.
Wasting that second set was a real pain, I just didn't realise I'd done so many kms in such a short amount of time. I forget how far I actually travel sometimes.
Since November 2005 the exxy has been to Darwin twice, up and down the Queensland coast several times, down to NSW a couple times, and now does a regular trip down to Mackay from the Atherton Tableland.
(I've got a trip report almost ready but it needs to be briefer).
