posticon Real time engine stats on laptop - conzult

Anyone looked into this at all? Ive been looking round the net and found several different methods of hooking up a laptop via the consult plug on the wiring loom in order to investigate computer fault codes and do other cool stuff. I havent found out if any of these have been tested on an x-trail or any QR motors at all but im working on it!
There is one called conZult designed for 300zx etc but they have a 4cyl version. You can read about it here: http://300zx-twinturbo.com/conzult/faq.htm
A cheaper option is available from NZ - see here: http://www.blazt.biz/
And believe it or not theres a good old aussie version located in adelaide just down the road from me! Havent managed to make contact yet but ive volunteered my exy for testing emoticon see here: http://www.plmsdevelopments.com/consult_if.shtml

Im still looking into it, if anyone knows anything please share, otherwise ill post my information here as I get it.

Guys,
I found something a while ago and it is in the ECU thread here.
Not sure if OBD2 ans Consult2 are the same.

Kev,

OBDII is a protocol used by the ECU (like ours) Consult II is the actual scanning/diagnostic device that is using the OBDII protocol.

All newer cars are OBDII compliant.

Might be worth mentioning that the workshop that diagnosed my crook crank-angle sensor a couple of months ago was using a "SnapOn" brand laptop computer! It wouldn't surprise me if it had capability to interrogate all different manufacturers ECU's.

Re: Real time engine stats on laptop - conzult

There is quite a lot of hand held and laptop based diagnostic equipment available. Scanning and diagnosing faults is normally pretty easy provided the operating system is compliant with the ECU...the problem is still pumping info back into the ECU to change parametres.
As we all knowemoticon

I will be happy with a piece of kit that can do the exy and triton, help me home service and monitor/ play with the engines... as well as get taken to work and used there on other vehicles as required...scanguage is being played with at the moment.Havent had much time but next week will be easier to really check it out

Re: Real time engine stats on laptop - conzult

I have been considering getting an engine analyser but wanted one that would work for a few makes of vehicle. After reading as much as possible I did not know what to do so I did some of my own research, and now uncerstand why this is all so hit and miss getting units that work.

OBD II is not a protocol but a standard and all cars since 1996. It is a requirement for cars sold in the USA.
BUT there are 3 basic electrical connection protocols used in OBD II on the 16 pin Data Link Connector , Chrysler European and most Asian use ISO9141 at 10 kB/sec, GM use SAE1850 VPW and Ford use SAE1850 PWM. After more searching I found that there is a newer system called CAN 11 bit or 29 bit (developed by Robert Bosch for BMW, now fitted since 2008 to most cars).
Whilst there are 3 older electrical connection protocols, the command set is fixed as SAE J1979 Standard.
So it is a matter of whether the analyser can change to this protocol in the software setup or not.

As to USB vs Serial. I have worked with many of these serial devices connecting to USB port convertors. The sofftware for the PC based scan thing is often setup up to talk to Serial, and will see only COM1 or COM2. Whilst a fully USB compatible device wont care which port on the PC you use, these serial devices software packages want to see a specific place. On your notebook in Control Panel under System you will see the USB ports are hardware assigned and cannot be changed by the user. Often by just trying all of the USB ports with the software set to COM1 you will find one that works. If you change the software to talk to COM2 a different one could work. Some software cannot be coaxed into seeing a USB as a COM port but wants a hardware port

References for this are at OBDII.com and a few Youtube OBDII video clips
Scantool.net seem to have a NissanX Trail compliant unit as well, but which one?

So now I know even less than when I started, and think the new Xy uses CAN?
It would be good to put a list together of which devices work with which variant Xy
T31 is the one I need
