What to do first? Personalising the Exy

Hiya all,

Being a new x-trail owner and not particularly mechanically minded - I am interested in people's opinions on what modifications I should make to personalise my blue 04 manual Exy. My priorities are as follows:

* Improving economy (fuel is a precious commodity - and I am a greenie @ heart)

* Improving performance (only if it does'nt compromise economy)

* Personalising the look

I have been reading through many of the posts, and I am amazed by what is possible. My dilemma is where to start! So what would you do first? Please post what you would do, why you would do it, and what it would cost.

looking forward to your suggestions!

Re: What to do first? Personalising the Exy

1. K&N Air filter- helps the engine breathe better so probably better economy & you are not filling the environment with lots of discarded air filters. $120
2. Cat-back exhaust system. better performance, better economy too if you drive carefully & dont use all that extra performance. Better ground clearance at the back if you are off roading. $800
3. Alutec strut bar - was amazed at the difference it made, no more wallowing feeling, makes the car feel safer & corner better.
4. for personalisation of the car visit the X-trail online shop & get things that appeal to you. If you like chrome you''l be in heaven.

Melissa,

Send me your exy for a couple of weeks with a blank cheque book and I'll do some magic to it that will leave you both impressed and satisfied emoticon

That way you don't have to worry about what to do first LOL

keep it looking sweet and simple!

get a nice set of alloys, the bigest you can afford!

a nice set of wheels brings out the wicked lines of the exy, then spend the rest of your money on making it go and handle better emoticon

You can buy mine and add your personalised plates. emoticon

In all seriousness, my order if starting out fresh would be:

 0.5 Alutec strut bar.

 1. Change engine oil to Caltex 5w-30 synthetic. $45 from Autobarn.

 2. K&N air filter. $110 from Autobarn.

 3. IPF Fatboy H4 headlight upgrade. $120 from ARB.

 4. Iridium spark plugs. $75 from Autobarn.

 5. Run only on Premium Unleaded and do a ECU reset to get the maximum performance. Shell Optimax.

 6. Exhaust system improvement to remove the large muffler. Whether the Hi-Tech design or not, just get rid of that damn 44gallon drum from under the rear. $250 - $1500.
 7. Chuck the tyres for better ones. Everyone knows my views on the BFG's emoticon, so consider the 225/70r16. $1000 - $1250

 8. If you have a nudgebar (or not), get a decent set of spotlights. $100 - $500.

 9. Pedders Trakryder 40mm spring lift emoticon, to give added clearance and more presence amoung the bigger trucks. $550 from Pedders.

 10. Aparently by adding as much chrome to your car as possible, the bling factors is unbelieveable. Just ask Jalal. emoticon

This list goes on and on, depending on your budget but the simplest ways to get a noticable improvement is the air filter, engine oil and fuel upgrade. All the best.

Brett,

You left-out one of THE main and most important upgrades and that is the Strut Bar!

That was my #1 mod and I never regretted it.

 Jalal,

TOTALLY agree. Make that number 0.5.

I agree that the transformation this bar gives far exceeds expectations. Especially now I am riding 40mm closer to heaven, it appears to have even more control. Last post has been edited to show my 'new' top 10.

Re: What to do first? Personalising the Exy

Thanks Dave, Jalal, Matt and Brett for your posts so far - by the sounds of things, the essentials for me to do first are get myself a K&N air filter and a strut bar. I already use BP ultimate - so one tick for me already.

Still comming to terms with my first debt (the exy is worth it though emoticon) so it will be steady as she goes with the improvements.

Keep the posts comming!

PS - Jalal, u should get your own show on community TV and call it 'Pimp my Exy' LOL. Seriously, ur ride is fabby emoticon

Re: What to do first? Personalising the Exy

Hi Melissa,

My advice on your very first mod is by far over everything else the K&N Air Filter. This mod alone is what has driven me to want more power to which I never thought was possible from an X-Trail. I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed. These are available from Jalal's On-Line X-Trail Shop

I'm not sure if you have seen this thread or not, but lets you what we have all done to our rides, emoticon Show us your modifications
