Dunno if this is the same thing, but in the S1 xtrail, i get a sort of "PSSSST" sound just after starting up...
This is normal and it's the ABS self-test. You should get worried if you don't hear it.

Re: Start up noise
hey dudes, bit of an old thread but just thought id chuck in my two cents worth
im pretty sure the noise we are all hearing is NOT oil related. its belt/pulley related.
when i installed my headers (which involved the removal of the alternator) i noticed the noise was completly gone after.
heres my thoery from a bit of mucking around before and after:
because when rubber is cold it is hard and in a contracted state (when compared to being warm that is) the belt is slightly shorter and stiffer, and as a result, pulls on the tensioner. the tensor idle wheel is a wheel on a spring loaded bracket that allows for some movement in both directions - thus keeping the belt tense. so when the engine bay is cold (cold morning etc..) the belt with pull on the tensioner and pull it out of the normal place. the rattling noise is simply the idle wheel spinning in a position that the engine's not used to, or the belt itself freeing up due to being stiff and hard. also someone mentioned that the noise is on the right side of the engine bay - where the alternator is.
im not 100% sure on this, but i gave everything a check over and tightend up some bolts (i went on a locktite spree when i did my valve screws - no screw was safe ), and i havnt heard the noise since!
thats just my thoery anyway - either way nothing to be worried about since many people have experienced the problem with no ill-effects to date (touch wood)

Re: Start up noise
Bruce,
They won't pin the cost on you if you agree beforehand with them that all such diagnostics would be covered by the Nissan warranty and the dealer has received a formal authorization from Nissan to do so.

Re: Start up noise
That can't be good for the engine Brad.
Do you use thicker oil for the winter months ?

Re: Start up noise
i believe this has been discussed in a few other threads, when you start the engine if you hear a rattle noise for 1-3 secs it will be your timing chain slapping the guide and/or your oil pump making the noise, this is because the engine oil towards the top of the motor drains back into the sump so there is low/no oil pressure at these components til the engine is cranked over a few times (the colder the outside temp the thicker your oil will be and longer it make take to get oil to these components, like the difference between a milkshake and a thickshake being sucked though a straw). although there is an anti drainback valve in geniune and SOME aftermarket oil filters to prevent this from happening it still happens every now and then. some top of the line europeon cars have an electric oil pump that primes and builds oil pressure before the car is started (much like a fuel pump) then it cuts out once the engine is started and the mechanical oil pump takes over.
if any of you are talking about when you turn the key to accessories or "ON" and you can hear a buzz/electric humm coming from the back of the car, this is your fuel pump priming the fuel system (with most fuel injected cars after you change a fuel filter you should turn the key on and off a few times to use this priming stage to fill the new fuel filter to avoid excessive engine cranking)
sorry about the novel but my 2 cents
