Tyre Pressure

Hi guys,

Just want to know the recommended tyre pressure on 16 inch alloy wheel tyre. I put on 29 psi 2 weeks ago. i dont know if this is related to fuel economy. i fill up full tank, i can only go up to 400 kms. and also what mode you guys are driving at, auto or 2 wd. As I will be driving to melb this easter long weekend. Thanks for the advise.

Re: Tyre Pressure

Hi Holly,

I am sure that the sticker near the hinges on the driver's door states 32psi all round on my Ti. That is what I run at and am getting just over 400km out of about 45 litres (just under 1/4 of a tank when I refill).

Re: Tyre Pressure

Holly,
Around town I run 30 psi all round. If I intend to do a highway run, I increase it to 32 in the front and when fully loaded, 34 in the rear.
Just got back from a trip to Canberra and I got 9.7l/100km (427km, took 41.5 litres to fill back up). That is also my first main 'post' Hiclone run and I am very impressed.
Holly, I would be dropping in to Nissan and explain this to them and see if they can check it out for you, 400km to a tank is not very good. Unless your a leadfoot.
 There are other factors, including:
-What fuel you use.
-Stop/start driving will use a lot more fuel than cruising at 110kph.
-The load your carrying.
-Check that your air filter isn't clogged or dirty.

On bitumen in normal weather conditions, ALWAYS drive in 2wd !!!

Re: Tyre Pressure

Holly,
Mine are 15" so contain a different volume of air and maybe a little different, and the tyre dealer just told me this morning I should run them at 40 psi. Remember that by the time you've driven to the service station you've warmed them up, and this adds about 4 lbs from what I can gather. On a long trip, such as highway driving between capitals, adding a bit will help the fuel economy. In any case, at the service station I'd be putting about 4psi more than what's recommended on the placard (especially if you're filling it up with stuff). You will probably feel the difference in the ride - he said this morning that firmer is better for the tyres - lowering them is the compromise for a softer ride. A tyre dealer should be able to tell you if the pressure has been too low or too high because the tyre wear will show up on either the shoulders (too low) or the centre (too high).

Re: Tyre Pressure

Dave,
40psi is a lot, even on 15" rims. Is that cold or hot. The ride must be a little firm at that pressures also. You will find that you may get punctures more easily at such high pressures, as the tyres no longer have any 'give' in them. Just appears too much pressure mate.

Re: Tyre Pressure

40 psi when the tyres are hot. Brett, I reckon it seems high too and I pointed out that after 20,000kms the tyres are wearing "flat and even" (their words) at my usual 36 hot, but he stuck to his guns. On bitumen he's probably right - going onto gravel and dirt roads I think I'd let them down a bit. That's why I suggested to Holly to try adding 4 lbs to the tyre placade rather than 8.

Re: Tyre Pressure

One thing I forgot to mention. Never rely on the old service station tyre gauge for an accurate reading. Before I went to Canberra last week, I pumped all my tyres up using the servo hose. I then checked each tyre with my 'good quality' tyre gauge and it showed that instead of 32psi, there was 38psi instead. These were cold readings as the servo is just around the corner and it was -1 degrees.

I use the 'Bushranger 3 in 1 tyre gauge', as this was voted the best last year in a comparision guide. This little gadget, priced at $35, has a top quality tyre pressure gauge, and an easy deflating tool, but I never understood what the 3rd thing it could do was ???

As for deflating tools, you can go past the 'Staun' deflators. Simply set to a predetermined pressure and screw on to each tyre. You get 4 in a pack, so it takes about 10min to lower all tyres.

Re: Tyre Pressure

Correction to me previous post, the recommended pressures for the Ti standard tyres is 29psi not 32psi as I stated. I was thinking of my previous car!

I am confused by this talk of measuring tyre pressure when the tyres are hot, I was also taught to measure pressure when cold not hot. When measuring while hot, how do you know that they are the same temperature every time you check them??

I think they count continuous and intermittent rapid tyre deflation as 2 things it can do, in addition to the yre guage, so thats the 3 in 1 emoticon

I'm with Adam on this point.

Many, many moons ago, I worked for a tire Company (Firestone) and learned that it's "almost useless" to measure tire pressure when they are hot....one will never get an accurate reading.

Cold is the way to go. Fortunately for me, I have an air compressor and do any required adjustments (weekly - except in Winter) in my driveway, early morning (before first drive).

If you have to go to the servo for air - here's a hint:

Check and note all tire pressures before driving to the servo. As an example, let's say the front right measures at 30 lbs. (before you drive to servo) and you want 32 lbs.

When you arrive at servo, re-measure pressures before adding any air. Let's assume it now reads 31 lbs. Given that you wanted an increase of 2 lbs (30 to 32) you should add the 2 lbs and bring it up to 33 lbs.

Re-check the pressure next morning (cold and before driving) and it should read pretty close to your desired 32 lbs.

In the absence of a compressor, this is a reasonable work-around that seems to work...

Cheers = Roger

BTW, I mentioned earlier that I was going to "experiment" with tire pressures with a view to improving fuel mileage.

I've run my 16s for about 2 weeks now at 34 lbs. (+2 lbs) and have indeed seen a "marginal" improvement - - every little bit helps.

I'll put my 17s on next month and will have to play some more to see what's best for them...........
