Tinting Taillights??

Hey guys. I have been toying with the idea of Very Lightly smoking my taillights.

I know you buy the paint from Supercheap or Autobarn, however after than im a little unsure.

Do you need to light scuff the lights with sandpaper so the paint will stick 1st??

If i screw it up, could i simply remove the paint with Thinners or Turps???

Do you need to run a CLEAR over the top??

What is the best way of doing it, 1 coat and let it dry to check darkness?? I dont want really dark lights... just a little to match my tint.

Not sure of the technique required, I am sure the tin would have directions on it though.

The one thing you need to consider is the light brightness after you do this. An upgrade to LED lights or just higher wattage bulbs should be considered. I don't think the X-Trail rear lights are very bright normally.

Would be a nice look though! emoticon

Re: Tinting Taillights??

T30Kid,

DO NOT scuff it with sandpaper. You can get clear undercoat for painting on plastic that would hold the paint better. Because the tail lights on the Exy is vertically fitted, you’d need to be positioned high enough when spraying to get an even layer of tint from one end to the other (going length wise). Don’t forget the to cover the entire car before doing this. If you haven’t spray painted before then consider taking the lights out first before spraying by laying them flat on the ground. This would also avoid overruns to flow down all over the light. Search for ‘spray painting tips’ on Google and they’d give you some tips on spraying motions etc ...
It is a great idea and if you can pull it off cleanly then it would look awesome, but if you are unsure then don’t do it yourself. Spend an extra $50-$100 and get it done by a spray painter.
Good luck and post some pics when it’s done so that I cam follow suit. emoticon

dont do it!!!!!!

i used this spray stuff on one of my cars, and it is vey hard to do just a light coat.

when done lightly it looks blotchy when the light up, and it is very hard to get off once its on

if you want it done, take it to a spray painter!

I agree with Adam on this one.

It will greatly reduce tail-light illumination and brightness.

You should look for LED alternatives before going a head with this mod.

I'll second that. Ditto to the legalities of it as well.

Re: Tinting Taillights??

Instead of painting the tail-lights and risk damage, try LAMIN-X them instead emoticon

Much safer and can be removed later on.

You will still get a Yellow card though LOL

This LAMIN X sounds good. I would get it tomorrow but I remembered I have chrome frames on my tail lights.
I have lightly smoked tail lights of my 2 previous cars and didn't have any problems, not saying anyone else won't either.
I believe the Toyota Kluger comes with tail lights which are few shades darker then most other cars.
