Snatching from sand

We are heading into soft sand territory over the holiday break and would like to ask if anybody has any tips for snatching their Xtrail from sand. Hasn't rained much in SE Qld so sand will be very soft. Towing hook failure etc. Hopefully, will not be needed but just in case. Thanks.

Re: Snatching from sand

bevnles,

This has already been discussed, try RECOVERY POINTS

Depending on how soft the sand is and how far you intend travelling, lowering tyre pressure to about 15psi will help alot. However if you are fully loaded, this could be too low and may damage your tyres. If fully loaded, try about 20psi in the rear. Just make sure you are able to reinflate the tyres to the correct presures.

Don't run in in 'LOCK' mode unless you really have to. Simple 'AUTO' mode will do and won't effect your fuel economy that much either.

The front recovery hooks will surfice for recovery of the exee without any problems. They are connected straight to the main chasis rail, with nice big bolts. If you have any doubts, pull one of the bolts off and visit a local heavy industry hardware or similar and try and get load bearing bolts.

To lessen the pressures on these hooks, drop into a 4wd store and pick up a 'load equalling strap', which is connected between both front recovery hooks, thus spreading the weight at each point. I use one on my larger Pajero and it is great. It also allows you to be pulled in a straight direction and not along the path of the single hook.

So where are you off to. Make sure you post some pics when you get back...but most of all, enjoy it.

Re: Snatching from sand

Thank you for that Brett. We are going to Kinkuna National Park which is between Bundaberg and Woodgate. It is a magnificent area for bush camping. The beach was rated amongst the ten best beaches in Australia. Very clean, very quiet and not a long way to drive to get there. Simply set up camp under the casuarinas on the dunes and veg out. There is about 2km of very sandy track once you leave the formed road. We have taken the X-trail across Australia but avoided the sand driving. Corrugations and bull dust not a problem.

Re: Snatching from sand

I do a lot of sand driving, I replaced the bolts in the tie down front points with hi tension steel bolts and use an equalising strap through the two tie down points. I use the factory fitted tow bar to be snatched, removing the ball tongue and slipping the pin through the snatch strap. Tyre pressure down to 15psi in sand & 12psi in powder sand. Due to the lack of height I belly out often but mates don’t mind the 2 minutes to snatch me out. SA members will know the Robe to Beachport run and Nora Criena sand dunes and salt creek run to the Murray mouth. Great fun, the esky is not really built for this area but what the heck great fun

Re: Snatching from sand

What a great experience! Tyre pressures at 19, auto, second, never missed a beat. No need for straps, never looked like getting stuck. Managed to keep out of some of the deeper wheel ruts by keeping one wheel on centre. Did everything our sons Patrol did. He was amazed. I think he had visions of spending the weekend pulling the oldies out of holes. Thanks for your advice. Some "real 4wd's" were bogged by being overconfident and not lowering tyre pressures.
