Re: Compatible Alloys for X-Trail

I wanted some alloys to replace the steel rims on my T31 ST ( and also gain a spare set of wheels ). Nissan have a 16" alloy as an accessory for the T31 which I ended up buying. I was a bit surprised that these wheels are 45mm offset when I was under the impression that 40mm was the stock figure.
I haven't fitted the wheels as yet but since they are a genuine accessory I assume there won't be any issues.

Hi Glenn,

There is postive and negative offset allowance to the alternative rims that are fitted to the xtrail.

Re: Compatible Alloys for X-Trail

Reading the owners handbook I noticed that the offset for the T31 is in fact 45mm - I guess this reinforces the fact that the T31 is an entirely new platform.

Re: Compatible Alloys for X-Trail

One thing that has not been highlighted in this discussion is that the diameter of the centre hole (called the bore) is also important. So, for example, Jalal's list (Jalal, can you give us the reference for this list please?) at the bottom of page 3 has
TOYOTA MR-2 92-95 5X114.3 60.1
as one of the compatible rims. But as far as I can work out it will not fit because the last number (60.1) is the diameter of the centre hole (measured in mm) and the XTrail bore is 66mm, or 66.1mm - I have seen both mentioned (does anyone know the exact specification?).

I would like to get 2 rims for my ride so that I have multiple spares when I go to central Australia. That means I am after exactly the same as what I already have, which is the standard steel rims. Their specifications are
15x6(size) 5X114.3(stud pattern) 40mm(offset) 66mm(bore)
Whatever I get will have to have exactly the same stud pattern and bore. The offset will have to be within a couple of mm and the size could be 15x6.5 and the tyres I have will still fit.

Given all this, you may ask why I don't just buy another rim from Nissan. The answer is that they wanted $270 each (and they said they were giving me a good deal). So why don't I get a second hand one from a wrecker? I have tried about 6 but nobody has one. So it becomes the question, what other cars at the wreckers will have rims that will work?

So far all I have found is
200SX 94>, 300ZX, Maxima, Serena 5 x 114.3 35...42 66.0
(which is mentioned at http://ausrotary.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26681&start=20&st=0&sk=t&sd=a )
Does anyone know of any other compatible rims?

Alternatively, do any of you upgrading to alloys want to sell me a couple of your old steel rims?

Alex

Re: Compatible Alloys for X-Trail

Alex,

The centre bore for the exy is 66.1mm.

I have used a spacer with a larger size centre bore without any problems, but obviously the centre bore can only be larger and not smaller for them to fit the xtrail.

Was the $270 for a steel or alloy rim? If steel, you can find them at tyre shops selling for around $50 bucks, just ring around and they'd have them there.

Otherwise create a "Wanted to Buy" advert within our forum and am sure someone would have it and will be willing to sell it for you.

Re: Compatible Alloys for X-Trail

I just wanted to comment on those "bore spacers". I had them on one set of rims on my previous car, and when I had new tyres put on, one of them dislodged slightly (they were plastic) and when the wheel nuts were tightened (with the evil rattle-gun!) the wheel went on crooked. I pointed it out immediately to the (apprentice?) tyre-fitter and he took the wheel off to check, and saw it had been crushed. He managed to get it back on again, but the thing is, if the wheel is designed to sit flush on the hub to ensure true-centre, then a plastic bore spacer isn't a good thing to use (at least if it was metal, it would be less prone to being crushed).

I had alloy or aluminium spacers with my 19" alloys Rich and never had a problem with them. They actually were permanently attached to the alloys after a while.

Rich
Agree with your post, especially the "evil" rattle gun.
Some of the more reputable tyre places are using torque wrenches when fitting wheels. I initially thought this was a bit over the top but after some research I have adopted this practice myself.
If you had not been observant you could have ended up in a very dangerous situation. Over the years I've gotten a bit paranoid about people working on my car and always go over it to check on work done. Many times I have found things not done correctly and ended up rectifying it myself.

Re: Compatible Alloys for X-Trail

Thanks Glenn. I notice he wants to sell with tyres (I already have tyres) but will contact him anyway.

Jalal - it was a steel rim they quoted for. I have talked to several tyre shops about second hand steel rims (and why I want them) and they did not volunteer that they could sell me a new steel rim cheaply. I would hope that they wanted to sell things enough for me not to have to ask again about new ones, but maybe I have to.

Jalal and Rich. I note that the "Car Bible" says

quote:

The wheel bolts or studs are there to hold the wheel laterally on to the axle, but they're not really designed to take vertical load - ie. they're not designed to take the weight of the car. That's the job of the centre spigot - the part of the axle that sticks out and pokes through the hole in the middle of the wheel. It's the load-bearing part of the axle and the wheel, as well as being the assembly that centres the wheel on the axle. For the most part, the centre spigot on aftermarket alloy wheels is much larger than that of the car you want to put them on to. When this happens, the best solution is a spigot locating ring (also called a hub-centric ring) which is essentially a steel or hard plastic doughnut designed to fit snugly on to your axle spigot and into the wheel spigot.

If the spacer is taking the load I would expect it to be so hard that it would not get squashed out of shape like yours Rich. I think I would be wary of them.

Alex
