Re: Interior Light

Kev,

I just went outside and took some pics in the dark. It is a bit brighter than what came-out in the photos but am not happy with the result emoticon

The light is not spreading across the entire ring properly. I hope you found a better way.

Image

I wish I can get my hands on a fibre optic type of LED which I can cover/wrap the entire ring with from the inside.

Re: Interior Light

Hi Jalal,

I've searched around the net quite a bit and could not find a string of LEDs small enough for what we want.
All of the guys at the electronics stores I've been into have not seen anything like what we are after.
Seems like we will have to make something ourselves.

I tried a ring of four 5mcd (low brightness) LEDs last night and while the light was good, it was not even around the ring.
I'm going to try the old sandpaper trick on the LEDs to spread the light a bit more and see what that looks like tonight.
If this does not work then it will be more LEDs in the 'string' as the next option.

Just curious ...
Why did you paint the globes red ?
I thought if you did not leave them white you would have used green or blue to match the new LED guages in your dash.

I was just testing the brightness and I do have other colour globes (including a blue LED wedge type) but the red colour was the brightest.

I can't believe we can't find what we want. am sure I have seen it before somewhere. Probably at Mr. Gadget

There are LED strips arouns, but their size is too big for our particular application.
Jaycar have many. If you go here Jaycar Home Page and browse Category 'Other Components' and Sub-Category 'LED - Bar' then you will see a range of both strip and flexible LED assemblies, but all too big.

Re: Interior Light

Thanks for the extra sites Jamie.
Unfortunately they have the same problems I have already found ... either rigid or too big.

Going by the previous thread content you already know we are trying to make a light for the ignition key surround.
For this we need something which is both flexible and only about 2-3mm thick otherwise it will stick out too far.
Apart from this, cost is the only limiting factor.
The optical fibre link you gave us was close, but the thinnest side-lighting fibre they had was 9mm.

If you find anything more I would welcome the help.

Re: Interior Light

Kev,

I scored a proper ignition light ring from the wreckers and it was off a Mitsubishi (can't remember the model but it was a new sedan)

I spent the entire day yesterday modifying it so it can sit properly and when I finished and put everything in place, I struck exactly the same problem emoticon the light is not spreading properly across the entire ring. I found the reason to be the black plastic surround which is part of the ignition assembly itself. It is blocking the light from spreading properly.

After numerous attempts to try and fix this problem today, I have finally given up emoticon

I put everything back together the way it was and will wait until I either find another type from another car that would fit or a thin enough fibre optic LED.

I have one last idea formed in my head just now and which I haven't tried emoticon

What happens if we use a clear and flexible PVC tube to fill the gap around the ignition and stick 2 LEDs in this tube from each end, wouldn't that force the light to travel inside the clear tube and hopefully form a ring emoticon

Re: Interior Light

I've got two LEDs Jalal so I can try it.
I'll look for the thin PVC tubing at the hardware over the weekend.
Not sure if we will need low or high brightness LEDs to best make this work.

I think I can get my ring I made from the cup to illuminate properly with a continuous ring of rectangular LEDs mounted in the collar. Tricky bit will be soldering all the connections and paralleling the groups for the 13.8V as there will be about 36 LEDs to make the complete ring emoticon
Since the LEDs are cheap and there is a discount for bulk buys it won't be a fortune but just a lot of fiddly work.

Re: Interior Light

Jalal,

Look at this test setup using the rectangular LEDs close together around the ring.
Image
There are only 4 LEDs in this test but the idea comes across I think.

Re: Interior Light

Good stuff Kev, that looks more presentable and closer to what we had in mind.

Did you try to shield the LEDs from the front, so you don't get that one bright spot in the ring and only force them to spread the light sideways?
