Re:

Not sure if i've said this already, but a supercharger on a small, low powered engine is a stupid idea.

Superchargers are great for big engines already producing a lot of power. They use much more engine power to produce boost than a turbo. In most cases, running the same boost, a turbo will produce more power than a supercharger.

As you start to get over ~120-150Kw/litre, turbo power drivability diminishes, whereas a supercharger will always deliver smooth constant power throughout.

Turbos and small, low powered engines are a perfect combination, assuming you don't want big power. You will likely have more flexibility to install, you won't produce enough boost to have problematic lag or undrive-able boost threshold. Overall efficiency will exceed a supercharger.

Seems every engine these days is turbo'd. They don't necessarily produce more power, but they are smaller and more fuel efficient. t=That must tell you something.

The only common factory supercharged engines are going to be big thirsty Americans, that probably produce less power than a turbocharged blender from Europe or Japan.

Re: Light Turbo/Supercharger of the X-Trail.....How???

Superchargers create full boost at any RPM where turbos need RPM to create boost.

For 4WDing, more RPM equates to more speed, not necessarily possible when moving over rough terrain. It is all about the low RPM torque, not the high RPM power.

Modern sperchargers have bypass valves for open-throttle conditions such as light acceleration or cruising, which cuts boost and raises full efficiency close to that of a standard engine.

Small engines mated to superchargers...
Toyota Corolla 1.8L Sportivo
VW Golf 1.4L TSI (supercharger for low RPM + turbo for high RPM)

Re: Light Turbo/Supercharger of the X-Trail.....How???

Forgive me if it has been quoted before, ( I did look but didn't see it) but I did find a site which gives the details of a turbo upgrade and rebuild for the QR25DE motor (in two parts) at 'Jim Wolf Technology'.

An easy google and a very informative set of articles which explains in detail, the strengths and weaknesses of that motor.
