Force-Flow Electric Supercharger
It comes as either a single or twin unit but is mainly meant for full-throttle power boost.
It uses a small brushed dc motor turbine similar to modelling electric flight motors which give it a short life.
If the motor could be changed to a brushless motor and a speed controller linked into the throttle then it could be worth trying.

Kev,

These "electric" superchargers have been proven to be worthless, they have been discussed on many performance car sites over the last few years, the result each time is that they are a waste of money.

Forced induction is not this easy or this cheap, at least not if you want to do it properly. emoticon

Hi Guys,

Please note that there is a new listing on eBay Australia at the moment advertising a turbo kit that is xtrail specific for $4,000

And it probably wouldn't cost a great deal more to get the original turbo version front cut sent over from Japan! :P

I got no idea really, but $4000 for a turbo that can be installed in 4-5 hours sounds fishy.

its also not intercooled...........

looks like a good kit to start with, but you would need to do alot more work to get it going well, not to mention a whole lot more cash.

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

Of the several performance workshops I know of (and the few around Rydalmere) I must say I've never heard of HiOctaneRacing before.

Unless they can provide a fair bit more information about it, I can't see how anyone is going to fork out $4k for what's probably a one-off production. If we could line up a Q&A session with the owner of the boosted X-Trail that would be nice.

Not that I have $4k to spend now with a baby on the way! emoticon

If I had it, I'd rather be spending my money on one that seems to be more reliable (at least from a number-of-sales point of view) like this one

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

I've been keeping an eye on this thread and thought I would throw in my 2cents worth.

Why not just ask one of the import wreckers to get a half cut in? Just Jap do really good deals like this. I bought a half cut some years ago. 20,000km SR20DET, cost $2200. Took about 16 hours to fit.

Apart from a bit of different wiring, I'm positive it wouldn't be a hassle to fit a QR20DET. Note you can get some pretty good kWs out of turbo with only a few mods.

I just visited ARB and bumped into the MD of Hioctaneracing who was there with an ST that had a charger. He invited me to their workshop and I can have a test drive as well.

So if there are any questions you have I'll see what answers I can get. I'll try and organise the visit for next week sometime.

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

Hi Ron,

Am surprised they didn't provide this information in their eBay advert already, but I'd be asking them the following:

1. What is the boost (in psi) they're running at?

2. What are the real power and torque gains, as the dyno chart they have provided in their eBay auction is VERY questionable and doesn't do a turboed engine any justice.

3. Why is it so expensive? emoticon

I dont think that its all that expensive....

Have you ever priced a new turbo? very expencive! not to mention the manifold

That kit would be a good starting point but i would be prepared to spend that price again in little extras to get the most out of it.

Having said that i personally wouldnt do it. I have had many friends add turbos to various cars with somtimes very bad results, sure they went fast but the kept breaking everything from gearboxes to cv joints and blowing motors. Some cars just arnt ment to have stacks of power.

A much safer option would be to scorce an SR20VET. It will prob end up being the cheaper and safer option in the long run!

Re: Light Turbo Charging of X-Trail.....How???

The guy at ARB said there was an increase from 80 to 120kw at the wheels, and that this is a low pressure setup - didn't mention the pressure but at a guess given the power increase it would have to be 6-8PSI.

I like the idea of this given my trailer weighs in at 1300kgs and has to go down to 2nd gear on long inclines. But I don't have 4 grand to spend either...
