posticon Re: Tyre Carrier

Hi All, Spent 10 weeks in 2007 hauling second spare on and off roof rack every day and this is my answer to the problem. I won't need to use towbar when touring so utilized towbar as mount plus bolted a bracket either side of towbar mounts to secure rack and stop it from rocking. . Rack weighs 32 kgms unloaded, add a wheel, 22 kgms and 25 litres of liquid and still comes well within maximum towbar load 150kgm. It took me 14 Saturdays to build, Gee sorry, am retired every day is a Saturday!

Thats a really good looking rack mate. emoticon
The split fold system works well on the Xtrail. Blends in well with the rear of the car. Nice job mate.....might hit you up for specs at a (much) later date emoticon
Cheers

Re: Tyre Carrier

Mate no matter how long it has taken you, look at the result.
I doubt ARB could have done a better job than you did. emoticon

Did you mount it to either side of the towbar ( I can see little droppers on either side) as well as the towball?
I guess if it was only mounted to the towball, it would rock/flex a little when loaded.
Top Job.

Hey guys thanks for feedback, pretty happy with results myself and if anyone interested could post detailed photos of rack for your reference. I think it should be bombproof , hardest part was finding catches and ended up buying ones designed to hold back of a horse float up.

Will break it in midyear on a trip up to Camerons Corner and surrounding area.

Cheers Compass 9
Jalal, thanks mfor your help with your guide on using Image Shack worked a treat.

Compass9
What is the visibility like looking out the back window, the spare tyre looks like it sits quite high?
Did you consider putting the spare on the other side or was there method in your madness?
