Hi Lucy,
If you are going to do a lot of serious 4WDing, you might consider changing your 17" rims to 16" so that you have more flex & give in the higher sidewalls than the lower profile of the 17" tyres.
Other than that, you might be able to have a modified version of a wheelchair lift fitted.
Here is someone who do wheelchair lifts and though they are in Sydney you could contact them to discuss possibilities as it seems they do specialised lifts.

Reggie got a different 4wd back in 2014 so may not be active on the forum much now.
Searching the internet for Xtrail T31 Wheel Carrier comes up with this one from Outback Accessories
It looks like the same as Reggie's going by the pick on the 2nd page of the Member's Ride Thread here so you might want to give them a call.
