Re: Cooling

Paul, what energises the indicator lights you have for your fans ?
I am guessing it is the voltage to the fan ?
Unless you have an airflow switch mounted infront or behind the fan then you would not be measuring the fan actually operating, just being switched.
If the fan motor is faulty like mine was then voltage would be no indication of it running at all.

There is a diagnostic in the Electronic Service Manual you can do with a 150 Ohm resistor in the temp sensor plug which will make the fans work at high speed for you to check.

Re: Cooling Issues

Hi Kev...I have 2 indicator lights connected individually to each fan, when a fan engages the relevant light illuminates indicating that the fan is operating, I have checked this with an assistant actually watching the fan operation. When travelling and the temps start to rise the fan (or fans) will engage, within a few moments the temps will start to fall. The problem is why the temps get so high in the first place causing the cruise control to drop out and the A/C to cut out until the temps fall to an acceptable level. If I elect to travel in the high heat without the CC engaged and the A/C off the temps do not rise to very high levels. I do have a 'scangauge' which reads the temps in C degrees separate from the temp gauge in the instrument panel. Both instruments confirm one another.

Regards, thank you for your input

Re:

so your towing something when this happens right?
if thats the case, that couldnt be normal operation maybe?

i did read for my t32 xtrail manual that the a/c will cut out when the coolant temperature reaches above certain limit. so if you are towing something and the a/c is on, and the temperature rises then its just the ecu protecting the engine from overheating.
could that be the case for your car?

Re: Cooling Issues

My X-Trail is a 2006 T30 Petrol which presumably was designed for Australian conditions, yet in the very hot Ambient temps it over heats when towing a 1500kg Pop-Top Caravan which is well below it's maximum of 2000kgs. The ECU does it's job by cutting out certain services when hot, albeit annoying...the question still being why does it over heat when towing? Under all other conditions when NOT towing the temps do not rise to points of concern. This issue has been around for several years now but only comes to the forefront in the heat of the summer most especially when crossing say the Nullarbor which I have traversed 14 times with the X-Trail, my 1996 3Lt V6 Magna never had this problem towing the same caravan.

Still seeking any suggestions apart from changing the vehicle which may be an option...in all other respects I am very happy with the performance of my X-trail.

Re: Cooling Issues

Hi Guys...I would add that once the A/C and cruise cut out the temps fall quickly and we return to normal service for a few kms then the same issue repeats it's self with the A/C and C/C cutting out, if I leave those facilities off there is no problem with the overheating...there-in lays an answer maybe...

Re:

yeah that is ridiculous isnt it..you would think, if nissan imports a vehicle and states that it can do, this and that, that it would actually do that under australian conditions.

i have noticed that nissan (not x-trail, necessarily) vehicles arent up to the quality of what they used to be up to the early 2000's .

i was quite surprised to discover that the whole tailgate on my t32 x trail is made out of plastic (besides the glass). how funny is that. i know the front fenders on the older x trails are made out of plastic...but a whole tailgate...thats funny.

Re: Cooling

1500kg tow weight doubles the weight the engine needs to pull around and although less than the 2000kg max tow weight, which is really just a structural limit, it is still quite a bit and a 3lt V6 Magna does have a bit more power I'm guessing too.

Extremes of power requirements, ambient temps and slow speeds will always stretch the limits of design and as such being out of "normal" operating conditions there should be some protection events triggering to stop damage from occuring.

The thing to note would be at what ambient temp all those things of aircon, towing, speed and CC will not cause the temp to rise so that you can know the limit.

Re: Cooling Issues

Hi Kev....interestingly the V6 Magna of that era had almost the same KW and NM of power as my current 2006 X-Trail, the Nissan is a far better towing platform also. The advantage of the Magna was the smoothness and quietness in comparison to the X-Trail, Nissan is more economical overall.

Thanks for the input Kev.

Re:

well my 2 month old x trail seems to be loosing coolant somehow.

about 100ml per 3000km or 2 months...
is that even acceptable? could it be slowly evaporating during very hot days?
i had a good look around all the pipes, hoses, head gasket and cant see any coolant reside. the only place where i can smell coolant is around the radiator cap, especially when its alike a really hot day eg 35degrees.

anyway, does anyone else experience minor coolant loss?

i have to say pretty much every car i've had always had coolant loss, but i would have though that a new x trail wouldnt. mind you my mother mazda 2 hasnt lost any coolant in 3 years.

and to make matters worse, dealers dont seel a 1 Litre coolant top up bottle (blue coolant) it only comes in 4 L ....for like $120

Re: Cooling Issues

Despite all my overheating issues my 10 year old X-Trail does not loose any coolant at all, yesterday it was 42C in Perth.

Reverting to my issues I have noted that when I set the Climate control to a cabin temp of 22C and not the 18C which I normally use the engine temps hover around 92-98C even at ambient of up to 40C as it was during yesterday, this may be an answer to my problem. When I try to get the cabin temps too low in extreme temperatures?
