Revs drop when starting up

Hi all,

I have noticed my revs drop seconds after I start up the Exy, goes very close to the 'O' mark, goes back up past '1' then settles back down at around 700-800. Its like a sudden loss of power/reverse surge, if you know what I mean...
Has anyone else experienced this and can explain what might be causing this?

thanks
Vik

Does this occur when the engine is both warm and cold?

Re: Revs drop when starting up

Vik,

When I first start my exy in the morning (cold start) the RPM shoots-up to around 2000rpm and drops straight away to around 1200, as soon as the engine warms-up it goes down to around 800-900rpm.

What you're experiencing could well be a dirty throttle body and if you notice that the rpm needle fluctuates (i.e. not steady) then I suggest you mention this to your dealer, as they may need to clean the throttle body.

I had a clogged throttle body at around 20,000kms when I took it off-road and driven through very heavy dust sections.

Also check the air-filter box as there maybe something trapped in there.

Re: Revs drop when starting up

Noel - It has happened in both cold and warm engine start ups. And I have even tried starting it up without giving it any gas as well. It sometimes feels as though it would stall.

Jalal - It will be interesting if it is the dirty throttle body becauee my Exy has never been on grass let alone offroad in dusty conditions and with only 7000ks on the clock.
Will double check the Air Filter unit.

Thanks guys.

It is early for it to happen at 7000kms indeed. Maybe it is giving you a signal that it wants more adventure and is a bit tired of the city traffic? LOL emoticon just kidding.

If it is doing that ongoing, take it to the dealer for a check-up. It could be something else more serious.

lol
She gets plenty of adventures at the lights the minute a Forrester or a CRV comes in sight emoticon Maybe she is asking for a K&N for Valentines!

Seriously though I will monitor it for another week or so and take to the dealers.

Re: Revs drop when starting up

O.K... I took the Exy for a drive, when I started it the engine was cold so naturally the revs were high, didn't feel anything, went down to normal as the engine warmed up.

Came back home, turned the engine off and started it back the revs played up again and dropped suddenly and the engine stalled!
I am worried, will tell the misses to keep the driving limited until my service is due. Will call Nissan tomorrow.

Yes sounds like something is wrong. You may also wish to check the hose entering the Throttle Body for detoriation and that it is connected properly. Refer to this pic:

Re: Revs drop when starting up

I have just started to experience the same problem with the idle revs over the last month. It only occurs when the engine is warm. My car has done 43000k.

It recently went in for the fuel pipe recall and I asked the dealer to have a look at this problem.

The said they reprogramed the ECU and set it to learn mode. The problem is still there and has now got to the point where the engine will stall.

If you find out the cause please post the result so I can try and get mine fixed.

I might ask the dealer to clean the throtle body to see if that helps.
