Dom, when I responded to you last night and said the gadget your dealer used was just for show, I was not entirely correct. The gadget he used was to program your new key (to match the immobilizer) the key (new key) can not be programmed by conventional methods and it needs that gadget to program the chip contained within it.
HERE is the gadget the dealers use to program new keys.
They don't need that gadget to program a new remote.
Hope that clears things up.
