Washing Machine Fails to Spin Spin-Dry Xtrail Keys

Last weekend, my xtrail key got a good clean up in my 5 month old Fisher Paykel's 40 minute wash cycle and wouldn't work afterwards.

Fortunately, after two attempts at drying it out manually, it worked again.

I used absorbent paper towels for drying the inside of the key case, battery compartment and component side of the PCB.

It took a more determined effort, involving dissassembling the key button side of the PCB and drying out water that had seeped under the plastic membrane covering it, before the remote worked again.

Touch wood, it's now continued to work for a week.

Often, when water gets under surface mount PCB components, rust can set in and lift the component off the PCB. The right way to get rid of the water is to use
water displacing chemicals to flush-out the water - but I didn't have any available.

So if your washing machine fails to correctly spin dry your keys too, don't give up too early. A manual dry-out might just save you the $150 a new one will cost.

Might ask for my money back on the washer though. The spin-dryer just wasn't up to scratch.

Can anyone recommend a better brand ?

LOL emoticon

I think you need THIS mate emoticon

Speaking of remote controls for the exy, is there a method where I can do a self-programming of a spare remote I managed to obtain or it needs to be done by the dealer?

With my Camry I was able to self-program the remote.

Over a year ago, a handbag snatcher got my wife's Xtrail keys. Cost of replacing all locks and keys was quoted to me as $950. I naturally shopped around to see who could do it cheaper, and every locksmith and mechanic I tried told me only Nissan dealers could program the keys and only Nissan had blanks for them (there's an IC in them).

I went for just getting a new key and getting the other one recoded - the dealer said this would prevent whoever had the old key from starting the car. But they would still be able to get entry to the car. It cost around $400 to get this far (the new key, new remote, and old ones recoded).

If you think about it, maybe its a good thing that its difficult to recode the keys.

I'd hope that if anyone turned up with a "second hand" key to re-program that the dealer would check it against a list of stolen keys. That would at least go some way towards justifying the cost.

Thanks for the link on the key "waterproofer". Wife was actually swimming at the time the handbag got snatched, so it just might be the solution.

Why? Making the keys "difficult to recode", and preventing licensed third-party locksmiths (i.e. "the competition") from creating copies, doesn't stop joyriders/casual thieves better than "easily recoded" keys. And anyone who plans to steal the car (professional) will have access to the neccessary factory equipment.

It's routing the customer under the guise of "security".

If you don't agree to the above, then please explain to me why a replacement key costs $400 from Nissan (and similarly from Toyota) but less than $150 from Holden where Holden has competition from locksmiths at ~$60.

I'd be far more likely to be convinced of Nissan (& Toyota)'s "good intentions" if they weren't quite so blatently screwing their customers!

Rgds,
Ben

Hi Ben,

You've put a good point. I did think the charge was pretty stiff. My Nissan dealer's come-back was that they were cheap - for a Honda it's around $900 for the same thing (I didn't try to disprove/prove that).

I don't have a problem with licensed locksmiths having access to the recoding equipment.

On second thoughts on Jalalski's expectations, maybe users being able to recode their keys is not a bad idea. It might be comparable to being able to set the combination on a safe.

That shouldn't require a locksmith's charge, nor Nissan's extraordinary key charges. Even Holden's charge looks crook when thought about this way.

Regards

Dom

Re: Washing Machine Fails to Spin Spin-Dry Xtrail Keys

Hi Guys,

Well, my visit to the dealers this afternoon to re-program a spare remote I managed to source was VERY interesting emoticon

I have learnt 2 important facts:

1. The reason why the dealer does NOT want to perform the disconnect of the key-in warning chime!

2. The way the remote is programmed by the dealer!

On the first point, it turns-out that the spare remote or your existing remote can NOT be re-programmed if the small plug for the key-in chime is disconnected. Apparently it completes the circuit for the remote to pick-up the new code and reset.

They couldn't program my remote and asked me straight away if I disconnected that plug, I said yes emoticon

On the second point, I was under the impression that re-programming was done by them at their workshop, hence the requirement to go to the dealer to have the remote coded or re-coded, but this proved to be false today and the whole operation is done inside the car and using the existing key.

This now leads me to believe that there MUST be a way for us (owners) to re-program and re-code the remotes ourselves (just like the Toyota remote I had) and Nissan is not telling us about it, so they can keep charging us for this "service"

I'm now adamant more than ever to find this little secret and hopefully I will emoticon

When I had a stolen key and remote replaced, the dealer had to re-program the new key/remote while I waited. Although he did it "all in the car", it was with the help of a small hand-held gadget which had plug-in trailing leads.

I don't know what he plugged in to, but it seemed to need more than just the keys and remote.

And it took all of maybe 2 minutes to do (say 5 if you include driving the car into/out of the workshop and fetching the gadget, add another 15 for the guy who's got to explain why it costs so much etc.,.etc.,..).

Do you think the gadget was just meant to make it look difficult/expensive ?

I'd be interested to hear if you find there is another way !
