Re: Dual Batteries

Paul,

Hate to disappoint you mate, but this DIY is extremely difficult. I have seen the dual battery tray and it accomodates a very small starter battery and a moderately sized aux. battery. It does go on the passenger side, where the original battery is. HOWEVER, heaps of items need to be relocated to fit it. I was given a quote of $500 to install it, not including the batteries. The redarc solenoid is a top little unit, well valued also.

Good luck with the install, but get ready for some major modifications to the engine bay.

Let me know how you go. I personally use a battery pack to run my lights and other appliances. BUT, would love a under bonnet dual set-up. emoticon

Re: Dual Batteries

This will be the next project i tackle. Im planing to fit tha aux battery in the back where the jack is.

At this stage im planing to use the Baintech controler. It comes with all the wiring you need. From the research ive been doing it seems like a good choise at a rerasonable price ( around $250 with out battery)

Hoping to tackle it early in the new year.

Re: Dual Batteries

Hey Matt,

I have also started looking at the Baintech unit, but my enquiries are $175 for the complete DIY kit and about $90 for the individual relay unit (without wiring). It looks like a top little unit. Just got to figure out what size sealed battery to fit in the rear.

They may do a discount, if we buy two units. emoticon

Just be mindful of running your spotties of the rear battery, will lead to a voltage drop due to the length of the cables, but you probably already knew that. emoticon

Re: Dual Batteries

Yep, installing the second battery in the rear where the jack currently resides is the only option, I have decided, after a really good think about it. Moving all those bits under the bonnet is just too hard. For running my engel, camp lighting and compressor, a rear mounted battery will do and if I ever have to use the second battery to start the car then I just unbolt it and put on ground near front of car and use my heavy jumper leads to connect the two. Obviously a second battery under the bonnet can be set up to also allow direct starting off it if needed, but there is just not enough room under the bonnet of the small xcy.

Re: Dual Batteries

Hello All,

I posted a question on the "New Member" section and Dave suggested that I ask the question on the thread that it relates to, so here goes.

I am in need of fitting duel batteries, I would like to know the following if somebody can help me:
1. The total time it takes to do the job, total hours approx, if you decide to put the battery in the rear?
2. An approximate cost of doing the job.

If somebody can help me with this information, I can then plan ahead and get it done.

Thanks
Michael

Re: Dual Batteries

Mick,

The complete installation of a rear mounted second battery will only take a few hours. There is some fiddling around to remove the lower mouldings to run the cables, but you would easily complete it in a day. Just be mindful of the voltage drop to the rear battery caused by the distance of the run and subsequent length of the cable. Go for quality cable and a quality isolator that can handle this run length. Is a dual battery a necessity or could you get away with a 4wd heavy duty battery pack. I have one and run my 40l Engel fridge and lights off it.

Re: Dual Batteries

A couple of weeks ago i purchased a Flyer battery box from sidewinder and am about to install it this week. I plan to run the cable to the battery through the grommet on the passenger side of the firewall if room permits. My only problem is that my UHF cable runs through there as well. Does anyone know if the power running through the battery cable would interfere with the signal of the UHF.

Cheers...

Re: Dual Batteries

Shouldn't be a problem Rob - coaxial cable has an outer shield which should protect from interference.

Re: Dual Batteries

I had a 2AWG power cable for the subwoofer amplifier and the UHF antenna cable going through the same hole in the firewall for a few years without any noticeable interference. Mind you, the low-pass filter on the subwoofer amplifier may have cancelled-out any interference that might've been there. Certainly didn't hear any noise through the UHF either.
