Re: Starting problems after moving the car

Noel, if it's flooding on a regular basis (or even irregular) I would've assumed the reprogram should be covered under warranty.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

I have experienced this problem on 2 occassions and both after just turning on and moving the vehicle a short way....eg street to the garage and then leaving it for a while.

When I went to start it, it just kept turning over but quite quickly like there was no compression. I tried this many times as it always had started so well. I gave up after not wanting to flatten the battery.

I called Nissan at Camberwell and spoke to their service manager who told me this was a common problem. He called it "bore wash". Apparently their is a fault in the injectors which sees them leak fuel after a brief start. He also named a couple of other Nissans which do this. The effect of the leaking fuel is to wash the oil from the oil compression ring on the piston, and hence you loose engine compression. He said the only way to start it was to keep the throttle depressed and just keep continuously cranking it over until it starts. I was worried about overheating wiring or the starter but he said it would be ok. This must cause excess engine wear from the continuous cranking without oil lubricating the bore and piston! Anyhow it eventually starts with a cloud of smoke.

So if you you have to move your car only a small distance before you leave it for a few hours, then let it idle a bit longer rather than just turn it off.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

Thanks Greg,

Seems like the Nissan mechanic is spot on in this case and the Nissan Micra used to have this problems as well as I have found.

Some Nissan dealers suggest that you remove the fuel pump fuse and crank until it fires then replace fuse whilst engine is running, instead of pressing the gas pedal and risk flooding it in the process.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

The bore wash theory is the correct one, but I'm not so sure about the faulty injectors. Most new cars that I know of suffer from this effect. It is because they run so rich while cold to avoid stalling, that there is enough fuel left in the bore if the engine is stopped prematurely to wash oil out of the rings, leaving you with little compression for the next start.

The answer is to let the car run until it warmed and the revs start to come down from the fast idle.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

The RACQ mechanic who attended my exxy when it happened to me late 2006, also said it was common in new cars.
It's only ever happened that once, but I make sure that I let the car idle for the amount of time recommended in the manual when I first start it, and it's never happened again. Touch wood.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

Got my first case of "bore wash" this morning.
I moved the Xtrail on Friday morning and left it sitting all weekend.
This morning, the engine turned over with no resistance so I knew what it was.
I held the pedal to the floor and kept cranking. After about 30 seconds it fired and all was good.
The typical rich exhaust smell and smoke was evident as it was cranking over before firing.

Thanks to Greg (Saratoga) for the post after speaking to the Nissan service manager.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

This has been happening to me a lot lately.
If the car is left for up to an hour it will not start until a lot of starter cranking has taken place.
When left overnight it starts OK in the morning or even after being parked at work all day.
I believe it is something to do with the crank positioning sensor as the engine warning light has been on for some time now & the consult diagnostic was for the sensor.
Once or twice the engine warning light has gone out for a day or so, only to come back on.
I occasionally get a miss when I am driving along also.
Service is due very soon & the sensor will be replaced then.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

Hi
I had a similar problem with my previous car - a NL Pajero.
Had all the same symptoms, to cut a long story short it turned out to be the fuel pump on the way out.
Fuel pressure was down to about half, it would start and run after a lot of coaxing and for normal demand the car would run perfectly.
Just a thought.
Cheers
Keith

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

Reviving this thread as this morning I had my second episode with the Exy of the car being moved a short distance, switched off and the engine flooding. After the first time we got the car going after several minutes of cranking and having the accelerator all the way to the floor. (I learned a lesson here to idle the car for a bit after moving it, and before switching it off).

Seems I forgot to relay this to hubby last night, as he moved Exy into the garage and switched it off straight away. This morning, no matter how many times I tried the Exy was stubborn and refused to kick over despite power to the car and the starter doing its thing (sounding quite ok - or so I thought!). Resorted to calling the NRMA, and in a suprise double whammy, the battery wasn't holding much load therefore wasn't causing the engine to crank as fast as it usually can either.

One brand new heavy duty battery later, two tries at cranking and Exy came to life in a cloud of white, stinky smoke emoticon

The NRMA guy told me he's had a few Exy's lately with the start up/flooding problem - seems the onset of the extremely cold weather here does not help the situation either.

Got a service booked in this week anyway, so will get the fuel system and sparkies checked anyway, but it seems a battery on the way out can add to and confuse the situation also.

Re: Starting problems after moving the car

Hi,
My car wouldn't start this morning. It would crank fine but it would not start. There was a strong smell of petrol coming out of the exhaust pipe, and after trying to start it a few times, not wanting to drain the battery, I decided to have a look on this forum for similar problems. The problem was borewash. I drove the car out of the garage last night and turned it off, so the engine was running for around 15 seconds. After reading the above advice, I thought it might be the same problem, so with the accelerator on full throttle, I cranked it for around 20 to 30 seconds and then pumped the pedal slowly up and down and then it fired. The ESC light also came on after starting, but turned off after turning the engine off and then on again.
After having just renewed the fuel pump, the worst was going through my mind, but luckily it was only borewash. I will let the car run longer in future.

Thanks
