Auto Transmission when reversing up hills

Hi All,

Well, overall I am very happy with my new 2006 STS X-Trail. However, I have found one interesting thing with the auto.

I drove the car down a steep driveway and parked the car on a flat area. I then reversed the car up the steep driveway (about 4 meters). When I reached the top (where it flattens out again) the auto appeared to be locked in reverse! What I mean is, depressing the auto transmission change button and applying a normal amount of force did not shift the transmission selector.

After a bit of force, I got it back into "Park" and a large clunk occurred. Everything appeared to operate as per normal after this. I did not think much of it because it did not happen again.

However, after backing up my boat (1000kgs) into a friends drive way (again, up a slight incline), when moving the transmission from Reverse to Park, then Park to Drive, I got a loud "clunk" that appeared to come from the transmission/diff.

Can someone tell me if this is normal?

I've got the car booked in for a service on the 2nd May so I would like to be armed with some knowledge before I go for a test drive with a mechanic.

and yes I did wait the recommended 800kms before towing the boat.

Cheers
Luke

Re: Auto Transmission when reversing up hills

Hi Luke,

This is normal and happens to me too, not even on a hill, but in my driveway.

It seems that when I park the exy (on P) and apply the hand-brake, the exy moves slightly forward, this in turn is causing the transmission diff to move slightly too in Park position.

When I get into the car the next morning, I find that the gear stick is just a tad hard to shift to R and sometimes get the clunking noise too if I shift it too hard.

The clunk noise will increase if the parked position is steeper and the car moves further in P position.

I think it is pretty normal and I used to get the same noise with my other auto.

Yes, i can support that. My exy is 2 months old and does exactly the same thing! It gets worse if you go off road!

Re: Auto Transmission when reversing up hills

I seem to recall reading my t30's manual that there is some mention of said clunk in the gearbox being normal.

Also a similar mention in regards to selecting 2wd/4wd at speed or while decelerating.

Re: Auto Transmission when reversing up hills

During our driver training whilst driving up and down the steepish hills, it was noted that when you stop on an incline or are changing the gear shifter that the following proceedure be followed:

- Apply brakes as normal to hold vehicle.
- Select Neutral position with foot still on brake pedal.
- Pull up Hand Brake.
- Release brake pedal slightly, hand brake is now holding vehicle.
- Gear selector should be free to move as no load on transmission linkages exists.
- Apply pressure to foot brake, select gear.
- Finally release park brake and check path is clear before moving off.
