Starting the exy

We have just picked up our new xtrail.

Whwn we picked up the exy it started like a trick. We gave it a expedition on a dirt road during the easter break and since then it has taken between 3 - 5 cranks to start.

I asked the service manager today as it was going it for it's 1000 service that it was taking this long and they looked suprised by this figure. He advised me that he would be looking into.

Then when i got a call to say the car was finished and ready to be picked up he told me that they had investigated the issue of the starting and as far as they were concerned nissan said that it was acceptable for the engine to crank 10-15 times befoer starting. He basically said the colder the temperature gets the worse (starting) it will get. What the?

Is this normal?

Re: Starting the exy

Dave,

Find another dealer to service your car with!

They have no access to part numbers, they think that 10-15 tries to the start the engine is normal. What are they doing in business?!!?

Have a look in the Recall thread, as Noel had the same problem and I think it was solved by using the magic "Subaru" spray that he got from the dealers.

Maybe take your car to Subaru for servicing instead of this dealer emoticon just kidding.

Seriously though, I think it's just a dirty throttle, but I also think it's too soon for it to get dirty already.

My advice, get a 2nd opinion on this from another dealer.

Jalal

I asked this guy yesterday why was this acceptable and he said that the ecm module print out did not indicate that there was anything wrong.

He also said that the person allocated to this issue was a trained Nissan engineer and he was operating under Nissan paramters.

I intend to harrass the sales manager tomorrow with this issue.

Re: Starting the exy

Dave,

It's not the sales mgr you need to harrass, it's the Service Mgr of the dealership you need to speak to.

Sales usually don't get involved once they sell you the car. It becomes the service department problem afterwards.

The ECU print-out wont indicate if the throttle body is dirty or not. This needs to be physically checked by them.

Under the Series I recall we had new ECU codes programmed, yet some of the guys sufferred the "Hard to start" symptom straight after the ECU was upgraded.

Re: Starting the exy

Well just got off the phone with the Service manager about this issue.

It seems that after chatting to the technical guy who servied the car the Service manager said that it was an issue as it is only 3 weeks old.

He was sending all the information to Nissan in Brisbane by fax this week and will get an answer by Friday as to what they intend to do.

I mentioned that it sounds like a dirty throttle body and he said he would look into that option as well (Blaa Blaa).

I wouldn't expect a dirty throttle body after only 1000 kilometres (new car)!

Re: Starting the exy

Well guys I got a call from the service manager yesterday. Seems that the engineer from Nissan has been sick for a week and as such has been unable to return the managers calls about the best action to take reguarding our starting issue.

They have admitted that 10 - 13 cranks to start is unacceptable and as such want to fix the problem.

They reckon that it has something to do with fuel pressure as it only happens after it has sat for a period of time. So they want me to give them them exy for a night so they can test it overnight and in the morning. Sounds like rubbish to me as I still think it is a dirty throttle body but I am open to suggestions.

Re: Starting the exy

Dave,

For peace of mind, just drop in to your nearest Subaru dealer and get the throttle cleaning stuff and spray inside the throttle yourself to see if it would solve the problem, if not, then take it to the dealers and leave it overnight as they suggested to indetify the problem, which could be something else.

Re: Starting the exy

well guys the saga continues.

I have had the exe back 3 times now and all for the porcess of staring the car and recording the details of the ecu. This would include sending the details to a tech at Nissan Melb who would relay his advice.

The service tech has told me that they think it is a faulty ecu or maybe a bad ecu program. It seems that our exe has a later software build than the dealers have and this may be causing the problem. It is causing the exe to act like it is flooded when in fact it isnt.

He also told me that the issue with the recall was that the software caused the engine to run rich causing carbon deposits which eventually would have a detrimental effect. Nissan was keen to fix this which included a reprogram and a clean up of the carbon deposits which included opening the engine etc.
