posticon 1 month old & paint chip !!!!

Hi folks,
This is my first time on the board. My wife and I are from sunny Cairns.

We bought a 2005 ST at the start of the month and couldnt wait to take it camping. We ended up going up the Tablelands within 2 days of buying it emoticon

Have a slight problem already though emoticon

I think someone must have hit us with a shopping trolley or car door as there is a small trainagular (if thats a word) chip in the drivers side door !!!

Its not any bigger than a 5cent coin but it sure stands out as you can see the white undercoat or metal (not sure which).

My question is. What would the best way to get this repaired? Being in cairns we cant risk rust getting in there.

Should I take it to the Nissan dealer?
Do it myself?
Take it somewhere else?

ANy advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi adammc,

And Welcome to the Forums.

I see you’re from sunny Cairns. Mate your in my neck of the woods. Great to see another xtrailer here from the Cairns area, emoticon. Could I ask how you came across the forums?

As for your scratch in the paintwork, that’s terrible to hear for a brand new vehicle. I am currently living with a large scratch that looks like it was made by a key, which extends from the rear quarter panel through to the front fender on the drivers side. Lucky for me my exy is twilight so it isn’t too obvious.

There have been some previous discussions on paint scratches, which can be found here:

How to remove unwanted scratches ???

Paint-work Care

Although at the end of the day, if the scratch is too deep, you'll have to get is professionally resprayed, to which I am considering with mine.

And there is also some brief information on Electronic Rust Protection here, which you may find of interest:

And whilst on the subject of Rust, here is another thread which you may find of interest:

Rust Prevention

Kind Regards

Re: 1 month old & paint chip !!!!

mmm Sorry about the chip. Sounds nasty.

There's two ways you can look at it.

If you're a nut like me who, washing my car is a ritual, a self patched 5-cent-sized touchup would stick out like dog's (you know what) and would drive me insane and I'd have to get it repaired professionaly.

If you're not too concerned and have a steady hand, give it a shot with the right colour of touch up paint and a small artist's brush.

Re: 1 month old & paint chip !!!!

Hi,
Thanks for all the great tips emoticon

I found the forums via a business card that was popped on my car door at Cairns Central.

I just got the car back, just had it fitted with Nissan's factory cargo barrier. Looks GREAT !!

The boys at the service centre have referred me to an Auto Smash repair place to get that chip fixed.

Hi Adammc,

The Business Card you found on your car door would been from me, emoticon

Mate depending on the cost to have it repaired, you might want to consider using your insurance.

I just used mine last month after having my exy reversed into. So for a $400 excess I got a new bumper, new nudge bar & new smoked bonnet protector, and personalised plates renewed.

Cheers

I also have sustained a scratch while in a shopping center carpark. I took the xtrail down to a panel shop I know to be pretty honest and they quoted me $300 to do a blend or $450 to remove and respray the whole bumper. The guy at the panel shop said if it was him he would be getting a factory mix of paint from Nissan and touching it up myself. Can you actually get a small factory paint mix from Nissan???

Re: 1 month old & paint chip !!!!

Don't know about "down under" but here in Canada we can buy a "touch-up paint pen" from the Dealer - only costs about $15 Cdn.

It has the "paint" applicator on one end and the "clear coat" on the other end.

When you depress the applicator, it releases the paint (or clear coat) on to a porous surface, which you simply apply to the affected area....after the paint dries (and it's important to make sure it's dry) you then apply the clear coat.

They come from the dealers based on the paint code of the vehicle.

Not a perfect result at first but improves with some waxing.

The important thing is that it does help to prevent rust....

If they're not available on your end (which I think they would be) I'd be happy to help out by buying one (or more) and shipping them out to you - obviously at your cost.

Cheers

The genuine nissan touch-up paint is available from your local dealer for the cost of $8.00

Image

Please note that this part number of my Black exy. I believe the part number for the touch-up paint in your case will be the same, except your colour code at the end (instead of KH3)

It is only good to be used on small scratches and stone chips, not long scratches, as it'll be quite visible.

Re: 1 month old & paint chip !!!!

I also have one of these touchup bottles which I bought shortly after buying our X-Trail, only I don't remember it being so cheap. It's like the old liquid-paper applicator. Mine was the wrong colour, as Nissan didn't have one in stock at the time to match my glittery diamond/pearl white. All touch-ups I have done around corners of doors and a stone chip in the bonnet are really noticeable. I would expect them to have the correct colour in stock now, and for a measly $8 I don't have an excuse not to get it emoticon
