Re: Milford Safety Net
Self-Installation of Milford Safety NET
I have just completed the self-installation of a Milford Net. The result is neat and tidy and I am pleased with the outcome. It cost $256 after $20 discount (Jan 06) to purchase.
Undoubtedly, it is not quite as safe as a steel barrier, but it IS a lot better looking and far less 'agricultual' in appearance. It does meet certain safety standards.
The net is a model-size designed for all small SUV's but the Installation kit is X-trail specific. The instructions provided were mostly generic and reasonable but could have been better. They covered the basic installation but DID NOT cover details on how to remove the trim etc. They did provide a list of tools & drill bits required.
The installation would NOT be for the fient-hearted but not too hard for any mechanically minded person who is not afraid to drill holes in their pride & joy.
I removed the upper trim to the rear side window after some difficulty and I think it would have been better to remove the lower trim first, but that would have been a big job. The X-Trail Workshop Manual (on disk) was a big help. At first I thought I would have to remove the roof lining but that was not the case. Some guidence from Milford would have made it easier. I did one side at a time so that any errors would not be made twice. The rubber seal around the rear opening and the side door opening was removed but easy to replace. The seat-belt was unbolted and the rear blind brackets removed.
Care had to be taken with the clips holding the plastic lining and also with their replacement. A degree of pushing, shoving and bending was necessary.
L/H & R/H rear with trim removed:
The hole drilling was not hard and details were given of their exact location. The bracket fitted up behind the roof lining was also easy but not fully detailed in the instructions but all went together easily.
Holes drilled - the middle one is to insert the metal threaded plate.
Note the two existing threaded holes that are not used.
Bracket installed:
The plastic trim went back reasonably well and the finished result was pleasing.
The lower straps of the net attached to the existing tie-down brackets.
Trim replaced with bracket cover-plate installed in roof lining:
Note my home-made bracket to raise the height of the blind support.
However, my rear blind will no longer clip to the seat backs as I had hoped, as the bottom bar of the net is now in the way. I plan to strap a metal 6mm rod to the rear of the net-base so that my blind will fasten to it.
Interestingly, there are two existing threaded bolt-holes very close to where the holes had to be drilled. Why does'nt Milford utilise them? Perhaps in some other part of the world Nissan sell a net or screen that is easy to fit.
Instlled net all finished:

Re: Milford Safety Net
There are 3 points for the child seat and am using the centre one for my 2 year old, so I should be fine However it is an issue for those using 2 child seats.
Thanks for the DIY Install John, I will now link your post to the DIY Guides and How To on the main site and the quick reference thread.

Re: Milford Safety Net
RE CHILDREN'S safety attachments.
Sorry Guys but with respect, the last three posts are in error:
There are in fact three recessed child restraint fixing points behind the rear seat, at least on my Xsky, PLUS two luggage tie down brackets.
The safety net is attached to the luggage tie down brackets, NOT any of the child restraint fixing points.
Therefore, children's facilities are not effected in any way.
(I just had to clarify that).
