Re: Gear Selection Habbits-Auto

I tend to find that always 'N' Neutral is the way to go.
If I stop at traffic lights, uphill, downhill, or level, I always pull-on the handbrake, and slip it into 'N''
Smoother idle, especially if the air-con is on, and c'mon, how difficult is it engage gear to go?
I'm sorry but I can't believe that the car is not doing any work when engaged in Drive, and sitting still. There are components that want the car to GO, but you're holding it with your foot on the brake. Something is wearing.
Just my ideas....and everyone has their own ideas on this.

Nothing is wearing. The torque converter allows for engine rotation without rotating the transmission drive shaft.
The transmission does not move because the torque output is insufficient to overcome the brake force. Just like trying to climb a hill too steep for the engine torque.

Re:

The diesel auto will disengage drive when you (just about) stop with the brake engaged.

If you come to a stop very slowly or rolling slowly in traffic with the brake on, it will disengage drive and the light brake pressure that was enough to keep the car rolling slowly, is now enough to bring it to a stop.

Drive will re-engage as soon as you step off the brake, but there is a momentary delay of course.
Another quirk, if you are on a hill, you can release the brake a little and the car will roll back as drive hasn't engaged yet.

You can override this by clicking to 'manual'.

Re: Gear Selection Habbits-Auto

I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT WHAT THE VIBRATION/ NOISE WAS IN MY X TRAIL.

IT WERE THE ALTERNATOR CLUTCH IT WERE.

Since I have had the alternator replaced, the vibration and noise have dissipated completely, so I now no longer put it in neutral when I stop.

But just a side note.

My wife and I were looking for a car for her a few weeks ago.
We chanced upon a nice little Mazda CX3.

When we took it for a test drive, it stalled at the lights.

But No, it didnt stall, this is the way of the future the salesperson told me.
The car turns off at stops and starts again when you take you foot off the brake or touch the accelerator.

What about the air conditioning I say?
There is plenty of gas in the system for the short wait he says.

What if I'm commuting in Sydney, stop and start. I say?
There is this little button that overrides the autostall he says.

I say can I get it turned off completely?
No he says, its fixed and is always on.

Stuff that I says

We didnt buy the mazda.
Shame, apart form that it was quite a good little car.
