My car has some 141,000 Km now. I tow a 2000+ Kg Boat rig with 2 axles 4 disc brakes. It is above recommended car specs. I have replaced the transmission fluid and filter myself 2 years ago. Towing in temperatures of 40+ deg C. No major issues. The trans uses a cooler built on the lower part of the radiator. On a very steep hill some 2-3 km I tow in 1 gear because on auto the gearbox hunts between 1st and second gear. Last time I towed was summer 2014 with +40 deg heat, the engine temp started rising so I immediately shut the ac off and pith the cabin heating to full hot with the fan on full. Immediately the temp gauge went down ... BUT this particular long and steep drive is the exception. Under other conditions I can tell you the car handles well considering it has about 138 hp.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Heligeorge)Fri, 05 Aug 2016 20:16:32 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2062762,from=rss#post2062762https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2062762,from=rss#post2062762T30 yes under heavy load, T31 CVT and T31 auto, not that I know of because both have transmission coolers.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Mon, 28 May 2012 14:09:18 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2062758,from=rss#post2062758https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2062758,from=rss#post2062758Does the transmission overheat in the auto version of the x-trail?nondisclosed_email@example.com (bleak213)Mon, 28 May 2012 13:53:58 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2033086,from=rss#post2033086https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2033086,from=rss#post2033086Thanks Dave, I have done 45,000 since I have had mine (had 26,000 on it when I bought it) so 71,000 on the clock now. Been a dream run, both towing and non towing, very happy with the Exxy as a tug. Thanks for the feedback, I'm carting my van around the S/W of WA shortly for three months, then after X'mas all being well doing the big lap for around 2 years. Pretty confident I have the right combination to do it, time will tell. I think you are now on the correct towing scenario. O/D OFF. My first day to Port Stephens from Adelaide was 600 K to Hay through a massive dust storm which reduced my speed to 20kph for about 40k. Considering that we had to stop twice for petrol and an extra time to change drivers, this is probably a minimal when travelling so far in one day. I did not have any problem with my Trans. When I returned from Port Stephens we had to climb up the hunter Valley and over the Great Dividing Range. This way is a lot steeper than the trip over the range when coming from Adelaide. We had to take the cruise off and travel in 2nd gear with over 4000 revs on but we were not continually changing gear so no problem was encounted except the increase in fuel consumption using 2nd gear. I travel at 90kph on cruise. Only once you get a steep hill the cruise has to come off. 90kph runs the motor at almost 3400 revs which is in the power band so if I need to speed up for a few hundred meters this is easily done.   Davenondisclosed_email@example.com (Davexnew7)Wed, 02 Sep 2009 11:50:32 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2033053,from=rss#post2033053https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2033053,from=rss#post2033053Thanks Jalal & Kev, I rang the RAC (WA) and they basically said what has already been said here, the fully laden weight of my small van would not be a problem (1200kg) however as has been said here tow with overdrive off to minimise damage to the auto gearbox through jerking etc, also to keep transmission temp down. They said on prolonged trips over many kilometres distance that have rest stops now and then to allow transmission to cool down would help also to avoid overheating damage to the transmission, although this is only a precaution if worried about it. I have a 2005 auto xTrail. In March of this year I went on 3 week holiday to NSW. 1900 odd klicks from Adelaide to Port Stephen over the Great Dividing Range. The same back again. I have a 15ft pop top which all up weighs 1490 kg. We also went up to Port Macquarie for a few days. I have also travelled to the west coast of SA 600 klicks on a 42 degree day. Never have I had a problem that would need an oil cooler. Why. Always travel with the O/D off. The quickest way to heat the transmission fluid is to leave the O/D on and have the gear change, hunt up and down in the gears. All the best in your travells   Davenondisclosed_email@example.com (Davexnew7)Mon, 31 Aug 2009 16:38:05 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2032918,from=rss#post2032918https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2032918,from=rss#post2032918Just reading all of the above. Can I assume that my 2003 Auto X'Trail has an automatic transmission cooler already installed and will it suffice for towing. I want to tow a small caravan around Oz for a year or two approx 1200 kgs loaded weight. I would be towing with overdrive off. Do I need to fit an extra auto transmission cooler or replace with one that has a better cooling capacity? It's oil heat-up that causes AT failure: quote:At elevated operating temperatures, ATF oxidizes, turns brown and takes on a smell like burnt toast. As heat destroys the fluid’s lubricating qualities and friction characteristics, varnish begins to form on internal parts (such as the valve body) which interferes with the operation of the transmission. If the temperature gets above 250 degrees F., rubber seals begin to harden, which leads to leaks and pressure losses. At higher temperatures the transmission begins to slip, which only aggravates overheating even more. Eventually the clutches burn out and the transmission calls it quits. The only way to repair the damage now is with an overhaul -- a job which can easily run upwards of $1500 on a late model front-wheel drive car. nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Tue, 11 Nov 2008 16:28:20 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2019074,from=rss#post2019074https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2019074,from=rss#post2019074thanks mate its the information i was hoping for. I mean i thought about it, nissan advertise the xtrail as great tow vehicles so you would think they would put a tranny cooler if it was required, i mean they are not that expensive. Most of my driving will be within sydney metro once a fortnight (sunday) i would be towing the boat, once or twice a year i would take it for a 3hr drive down the coast that pretty much it. I Suppose if you use the auto properly with OD off it wouldnt change gears as much. Is transmission damage cause my changing gears to reguarly? or does the oil heat up because of the extra weight your towing? thanks for your help stevenondisclosed_email@example.com (Stevo78)Tue, 11 Nov 2008 16:18:42 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2019014,from=rss#post2019014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2019014,from=rss#post2019014Steve, You can fit the transmission cooler for added peace of mind, it won't do any damage if it's there, but in reality you have to weigh-up your options and see how frequently you drive around with the boat behind you xtrail and 1,200Kg is not a great deal of load to be causing that much stress to your transmission unless you're driving in hilly areas all the time. The xtrail is over-rated when Nissan Australia mentioned the 2000Kg towing ability, we have seen evidence of chassis cracking when the xtrail is used to tow such heavy loads on frequent basis, some of this is directly attributed to the poor design of the genuine Nissan towbar, so to be on the safe side, never get to that limit if you don't want to discover long term problem further down the track.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Mon, 10 Nov 2008 17:51:52 +0000 Re: Transmission Coolerhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2019011,from=rss#post2019011https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2019011,from=rss#post2019011Posted by Stevo78 - Moved from another thread Hello Fellas First off i would like to say how great this site is, without it i dont think i would of just purchased our xtrail, she is an 06 STS Extreme with 47,000Ks. My question is reguarding automatic transmission coolers, i have spoken to some auto specialists some say fit it, other say dont need it, one of them said he wont do it because some transmissions require the oil to be hot to change gears and having a cooler and not towing will cause problems. Then i rang nissan serviced and asked, i will be towing a boat 1200-1400kg They said if its under 1500kg its not required, now i dont know who to beleive as the service guy also said my gearbox wont handle anything over 1500kg towing, when it rated for 2000kg? So now im confused and i dont know which way to go. How many of you tow regularly without a cooler? Most of my trips will be within 30km from home to the ramp with the occasional long trip.
