Re: Roof Boxes (Luggage Pods)

Hi mate,

I have the Rhino roof luggage box which am pretty happy with and I have used it off-road too.

You can see pics of it in THIS thread.

In this trip, I had in there 4 chairs, a table, a 6 man tent and pillows and blankets.

It is a space saver for sure, but wind resistance on the highway is a killer and your fuel consumption will go up.

Thanks for that Jalal. Which model Rhino do you have to fit all those things in?

I can't remember the model, but I got it for $295 from Town&Country 4WD shop at Roselands.

Repco and Supercheap Auto had them on special recently too (I think it was Thule brand)

Jalal,

I am looking at adding the roof storage pod for my 2007 trip to WA. You mention the fuel economy goes up, not a problem there, but I am trying to work out fuel loads.

Mate, any information on roughly what the exee gets to a tank with the pod on would be appreciated.

No worries Brett. I can remember the figures clearly as they were the worst figures I have ever had emoticon

over 14LT/100kms highway driving with the luggage box loaded to the limit and 4 of us in the car, plus the boot area stacked-up to the roof with stuff emoticon

Re: Roof Boxes (Luggage Pods)

Hi,

I have a Karrite P2002 roof box. They are now labelled Rola.
There are a couple of things to note with a roof box:
1. Which side (or back) they open. The continental European ones (Thule for e.g.) mostly open on the right hand side. This is not ideal as it means in Aus we are standing on the traffic side of the car to get stuff in/out. The Rola's are sourced from the UK I think so open on the left. Some open at the back now and I would'nt think they are ideal for a car which has the rear door open upwards either.
2. Length - Depending what you want to carry, length is an issue. We ski so I wanted one that could fit the skis, so got one 190cm long. It is important to note modern skis are nowhere near as long as they used to be so the 2mtr+ Thule jobs are just not needed anymore. I think the Rola P2001 is the same volume as ours but approx 1.5mtr length. I would think length could be an issue for some tent poles too, so is worth considering.
3. Keep it light - I always try and keep it light to avoid the centre of gravity being changed too much. So light bulky stuff goes in it when I can. Also great for messy/sandy beach and snow stuff too. I have also only noticed a slight change in fuel consumption in our previous car (Volvo 850 sedan). I need to drill a couple of new holes to fit it to our new exy so have'nt done this yet, so no idea about fuel use on the exy yet. Mind you, probably a long and narrow roof box has advantages here.
4. Remember it is on your roof before driving into the garage!!! Good friend destroyed his this way emoticon

I shopped around quite abit a few years ago and the best price was Miranda Roof Rack City in Sydney. I paid $395, but they are now $450 here. My sister recently bought one and I even rang some places and quoted this price and nobody would match it. My sister did finally get one from Ryde for $450 that someone had ordered then changed their mind on.
When I ranf around one guy said that Rhino were changing there boxes so were selling out the remainders. You may get a bargain on one of these, or there may be none around but the new models could have advantages so make sure you check these out.

All the best
Brendon

Thanks heaps guys. I will use this information when making my decisions.

Although our trip is a while away, we did a practice pack and once the Engel fridge was put in, there wasn't much more room for the bulky stuff.

Sorry mate, it was just a spur of the moment thing... forgot about the Search Bar!
Anyways, I think have got all the info that I needed. Thanks again.

I would like to point out however the special at K-Mart for the roof pod ($170) which is a very good price. It would pay for members to go and check it out if they would like to buy one.

cheers
Vik

No worries Vik emoticon

I was actually enjoying my sleep after staying up late watching the world cup, until I got a "double-post" alert pop-up and wake me up. hahahaha emoticon

Do you have the K-mart catalogue you can scan a photo of this roof pod off? Seems like a bargain price indeed!
